Tutti80:  I would say go for it. I was going to get the skyla, I am on the smaller side and that is what my dr. recommended, but my FI was against it. He has had 2 girlfriends who have had to had it surgically removed. Not that this is common, but he is bias. I would talk to your doctor more. They say bleeding is common for the first 3 months. I don’t think it’s heavy though, just spotting.

There’s no need to yell. I have the Mirena and I absolutely love it. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I didn’t have any side effects other than my period stopping (which to me was more of an amazing bonus than a side effect).

Tutti80:  I had Mirena for just under 5 years. Loved it. Had no problems. And maybe had 3 slight periods on it. I think it really depends on your body though because a friend of mine also got it in and could only keep it in for 3-4 months because it caused her periods to be so out of wack. They would last almost 3 weeks sometimes, then it would stop for 5 or so days then start back up and be 2 or 3 weeks long. It was awful for her but I’ve heard more success stories than not. I got it taken out a year ago this month and my periods have been much lighter than they were before I got it and they went right back to their normal cycle.

Good luck!

My experience with the Mirena has been pretty good so far, I would definitely recommend it. I spotted for about two weeks after insertion, went through two pretty normal seeming periods, and then after that didn’t get it again for about a year. Now I get a period fairly regularly once a year (I’ve noticed it tends to happen in the summer, lol) but it’s very light.

I haven’t had any noticeable side effects, I don’t have to remember to take anything, AND it lasts 5 years! It’s been good for me so far for 3.5 years, and I’ll probably just get another one when this one’s time is up.

I had the Mirena and it would have been 5 yrs in March. I had it taken out just yesterday because i had irregular spotting. My obgyn put me on estrogen and that helped but its started back. Also i think it has a lot to do with the recurrent YIs. Apart from that, everything was great!

Tutti80:  It was the best decision I ever made 4 years ago! I had very abnormal cycle where I would bleed for a month (or two) and stop for a week (opposite of everyone else) with Horrible cramps ( I was taking the strongest lortab for cramps) and my Dr. recommended it because one side effect is it could possible stop your cycle well mine stopped 4 days after I got it and has never came back. A friend of mine who also has it she has a very light cycle for 2 days and that’s it.

After the procedure i had very minimal cramping my other cramps were way worse

I’ve had my Mirena for just over 5 years and it’s been great. I don’t get my period at all, which worries some people but suits me just fine. It was very painful getting it inserted, I had to go to 3 different gynocologists – but once it was in, there was minimal cramping and bleeding. My fiancé commented once at the beginning of our relationship that he thought he felt it, but hasn’t since then. Overall, no regrets.

I love mine. Try to find a doctor who will freeze you prior to insertion. I read all these horror stories about how much it hurts to have inserted, imagine my suprise when it didn’t hurt at all!
