But not near as expensive? In browsing photographer websites, I have become enamoured with the style of Jasmine Star but she is way too expensive for what we are willing to spend, while not wanting to skimp on quality because you can’t recreate the day at all. At the same time, it’s also difficult to stomach the idea of spending so much that you don’t have much leftover to even photograph. The main thing I like about her style that I have not seen elsewhere is she consistently has vibrant crystal clear images without artsy lighting/washes and grainy textures that so many photographers seem to specialize in. While I also understand that you can’t judge a photographer by their website alone, I do find it interesting in looking at the different sites, that while they may have a few crystal clear pictures, the majority are grainy, taking pictures directly facing into the sun so you can’t see the subject at all for the glare of the sun, etc almost as if they came from an entirely different photographer. Are those artsy “special effects” something you could request not to have or is that their general style how they do all their photos as in how their cameras operate? For that reason, researching photographers is a difficult process because you don’t want to hate or regret your pictures because you feel you have to settle for “second best”.
Has anyone else had a similar experience in searching for their own vendors?

I think that when you book a photographer, you can request a certain style of photograhy you prefer, and if they are truly a professional, they will stick with that. Keep in mind, photos are going to be your lasting memory of your wedding..! For me, spending a little more on photography was not a big sacrifice for me, b/c I know we will cerish those pictures for a long time coming! 🙂
With Jasmine Star, maybe she has associate photographers she deals with, so you can get someone that has similar style/background, without breaking the bank. You should contact her, and find out!

I think if you are booking a photographer that has a certain style, you should be sure that you like that style. No reason to book an artist that specializes in vintage when what you really want is modern!
You could try Evan Bishop, but he’s in San Diego…

Definitely book a photographer who’s style you like. A photographer typically will not change their style for you 🙂 the style you described is uber popular in LA.
Here are some suggestions:
Christine Farah – i heart her. she was booked for my wedding.
Orange Turtle – in San Diego but super affordable
Travis Hoehne – Sacramento, travels everywhere
My photographer, Marlin Munoz, is phenom and totally affordable but he’s less glam than Jasmine.

Check out Sarah K Chen– her blog, not her website portfolio, which is more of what you’re looking for. I’m not sure what she charges but it’s gotta be less than Jasmine Star.
I totally agree with you– I think post-processing is used too often these days to hide flawed photos.

I think that SoCal brides are fortunate to have such a variety of photographers to choose from. Here are some photographers that may fit into what you are looking for aesthetically with a lower price point:
The Modern Type
Sarah K Chen
I used Sarah for my own wedding this year. I suggest checking her porfolio and her old blog which features images more in the style you are looking for.
I hear you on Jasmine Star though. She takes the most crisp images I have ever seen. Flawless. From my understanding, Jasmine does not have any associates and her husband is the second shooter.

As a photographer myself I can tell you that alot of the ‘artsy’ stuff you are referring to is either done intentionally when the photo is taken or for the grainy textured look is created afterwards in photoshop. It just depends on the photographers ‘style’. I think you can for sure find a photographer that display’s similar style to Jasmine’s. I am also a huge fan of Jasmine’s work. I am currently planning a vow renewal and am probably going to hire Jasmine to do some ‘day after’ images for my husband and I.
When you are looking for your photographer be sure to look at their blog as that is usually the place where many of us share our most recent work which will give you a good idea of a photographers ‘style’. Be it vibrant and colorful, or the more grainy textured look. As long as you choose a photographer that feels very ‘you’ Im sure you will be very happy 🙂
You were given some great rec’s above. You may also want to check out

Has anyone worked with Alex Neumann?

I am not sure exactly what your budget is. Jasmine Star looks quite expensive…
My photographer has a similar style. I really liked that they wanted my FI and I to tell them what we expected of them, i.e. they will do whatever style you tell them to do! Also, when is your wedding date? (They book pretty fast)
If you don’t want super photoshopped looking photo’s, they will happily oblige. They are a super fun, young hip couple and are very open-minded to whatever is out there.
They are in San Diego but I am sure they will travel to LA and besides, its really not that far. Again, I am not sure what is “expensive” to you but I’m on a budget and they suited my needs so maybe they’ll suit yours.
