He's a friend of yours and he won't just burn you a DVD? Prints are a big pain in the butt in comparison. The price of the DVD depends on the cost of the package. I've seen packages that are $1500 that don't include CDs and usually, when they are around $2500 and up they do include the CD
Hey i'm from StL, too! Yay =]
He's a professonal photog, been shooting for 5 years or so.
Our total package is $5k, including e-pics and aftershoot sessions and an album. He charges like $450 for a DVD of wedding photos, so the e pic one is obviously less.
that seems like a lot, but we went with a photog who gives the rights for a reason! can't you use the prints credit toward the dvd?
Well, for me it would depend on how much his base package is, if that fee is low then it might be worth it to pay for your images. In your situation, $5000 is pretty expensive and at that price point I would almost expect a complimentary DVD of hi-res images.
We paid $150 for the DVD of our engagement photos. A DVD of the wedding ones were included in our package.
I think my photog charges like $250 for them if they're not in your package..I think they are included in mine. Don't go by your fiances reaction though...cuz I found that no matter how good i did at finding good deals everything seemed like a lot to him! But I didn't drag him around everywhere so he didn't really have anything to compare it too. Sometimes they just don't realize how much most things in weddings are. I mean $5000 is a lot and I would think you'd get your images included in that, mine is about $3400 and it includes my videographer too.
Oh but wait, I just re-read your post...you're saying thats for the e-pics??!! Yea ours was only $100 to buy them, and I chose not too...I did a print screen of each image and pasted and cropped them in photoshop and saved each one...time consuming but free!
It really, really, really depends on the photographer. If he's an amazing artist, then I'd say that's fine. If he is solid (good, but not spectacular) and you're talking about a disk of untouched images, then I'd say it's on the high side. But you should have had all these prices before agreeing to anything. Was this sprung on you after the shoot?
Sorry that's not much of an answer... It's just hard to judge, you know?
Our e-session cost $275. It included 2 hours (it ended up being 1 hr 45 min), high-res CD/DVD, online proofing and an 8x10. So, yes, I think $300 is too much for a CD/DVD, especially since your photographer is a friend!
Well teh DVD of wedding images is included in our package. He gave us $250 of print credit when we booked him since I am a friend but I didn't ask about e-pic DVD b/c at the time I didn't know we would need it. We chose the middle package of his options.
FI and I talked and if we pick and choose wich proofs we want on the DVD, it will be less. ALL of them will be $300. He basically threw the DVD in when he gave us the extra print credit when we booked, but we're still sort of torn.
Oh geesh....I'm curious to know who you went with out of St. Louis. I couldn't find anyone above $4,500 for photos here!
Our package was $3,200 and I hadn't thought about asking for a DVD of our engagement photos--I just thought "all images" meant "all images" but when I had asked her about it at our engagement shoot, she did say that we got them with our wedding DVD, so it'll be 10 months before we have those in our hands again! For 5K i think I'd expect the DVD with e-photos, too...i know he's a friend, but i looked high and low and couldn't find any photographer of WPPI award winning amazingness a year and a half ago when I booked mine....$5,000 is a big fat chunk for the midwest.
If all you want to make is a guestbook, why not ask him how much it would be to have him design and print one for you? It could very well be less than what the digital files would be, plus you'll get a higher quality book and not have to worry about doing the work!
That sounds reasonable, my disc for engagement photos was $500, but well worth having. Shutterfly books are onlu around $35, and most photographers charge $1000+ for these books where I live. We used our engagement images for a guestbook we made in shutterfly, for table numbers, on our wedding website, and I am blowing one up on canvas for our bedroom for christmas for my husband! Well worth having the rights. Engagement pictures are far more natural that wedding pictures and you'll have so many uses for them around the house.
I am agreeing with EJS... I know friends have to get paid for their work, but to me that is an extreme amount of money when you're paying him soooo much anyways! How long was your e-shoot? how many pics do you think he got? I mean, there's a big difference in the number of pics from a 2 hour shoot versus an 8 hour wedding shoot with NOT a lot of difference in price.
Do you want the photos released? If you'll want them later, just go ahead and buy them... but remember to think about these things ahead of time with other vendors later! :) Good luck!
PS-I don't know your relationship, but it's a little crappy that your friend didn't negotiate down at all! That stinks.
He's not a st louis photog, he's out of Illinois. He travelled from out of town to the shoot location and we spent 3 hours with him and have about 75-100 proofs to choose from. I did a lot of research before we booked and his packages were comparable to people around STL, in my hometown, and in Chicago, particularly for the style of his work and for what is included in the package. We're all fine with that and I am not concerned at all with the price, so that's a non-issue. We're getting a lot for it and we can afford it.
I talked to him and he's throwing the DVD in when we order x amount of prints. We're good with that.
I had a photog that wasn't doing my wedding, his engagement session cost 350 and the dvd was 200 dollars, so it was a total of 550 to get all the pictures. He took 137 picture of us so it turned out to be about 4 dollars a picture in the end. 300 does seem like a lot especially if you got less than a 100 pictures out of it... for a 3 hour session? Really? You should have gotten a less 300 pictures... I was only with the photog for less than 2 hours and we got 137 pictures, though I only really liked about 96 pictures from that session but that's a lot of pictures I liked. I'm just saying. ^_^
75-100 final proofs that we picked. He took about 600 total.
Seems like a lot, but I'm not sure! Our photog. gives us the digital negatives!
Your package sort of sounds like mine. We are paying about $5k for our photogs with all day wedding, pre wedding shoot (in Aruba), and e pics, they actually said they'd do our rehearsal dinner too because they might as well work while in Aruba (no extra charge). The wedding photo CD will be included in this package.
We just did out e session 2 weeks ago and we just bought the "rights"/CD for $80 (it was $100, but we got an early bird special). It was a 2hr shoot, 2 photogs, and we got about 70 edited pics back. WE LOVE THEM ALL!!
So the price of your photog sounds about right, but maybe a little pricey on the CD/DVD option.
I got an exceptional deal on my photography, so I'm not much help here.
I just wanted to say I'm an StL bride too!
we're paying an extra $450 for a dvd of our epics. the wedding photo dvd is included in the package.
Holy crap, am I glad I live in Atlanta. We only paid $700 for our pics - all prints, DVD, everything dang thing!
If he weren't your friend, I would think he's charging you too much. But since he's your friend, I definitely think he's charging you too much.
Our photographer, based in New York City, allowed us to negotiate our package. For $4200, we're getting an engagement session, a linen guestbook of engagement photos for our wedding, 10 hours of wedding photography with two photographers, a DVD of un-watermarked images of our engagement session, and a DVD of un-watermarked images of our wedding.
Can you ask him if he can throw them in for you, especially since he didn't discount your package?

We had e-pics taken recently (part of our package). We have a significant amount of print credit to play with - our photog is a friend of mine and though he didn't discount his package, he upped the print credit big time.
We're planning on using the e pics as a yearbook-style geustbook, so I need digital prints to make it via Blurb, Shutterfly, etc. The photog charges $300 for a dvd of all of them. Considering dvds of wedding pics are $450 in his packages, I thought this was ok but FI almost died.
Is it a lot? If it's not in your package, how much do CDs/DVDs of pics cost?
