my friend is pregnant and her top name for her baby girl is
i read it and see purse-a-phone
i think the middle name will be Libby Kate ?
she loves old fashioned classic names.
she asked for my dead honest opinion and i didnt quite know what to say….do i hate it or love it hhmmmm. shes my bestest BFF and appreciates my honest opinion, so i told her id ask you ladies on the Bee as you always give good constructive and logical feedback. i dont hate it but i dont love it.
i thought she might be able to change the spelling of it but what to? it all looks weird haha!
just an Edit – when i originally started this post i had NO idea there was greek mythology behind this name!!!! very interesting!

@nearlymarriedlass: I like Persephone for a name because I’m into greek mythology, however it doesn’t go with Libby Kate for middle names in my opinion.

@nearlymarriedlass: Isn’t that the name of Hades’ wife in greek mythology? That alone would be enough to keep me from naming my child that.
I think it could be a neat name, but I would just associate it with “queen of the underworld” in my head…
ETA: “Persephone Libby Kate” might actually be the worst name combination ever…

Not my taste but I guess if you are into Greek mythology it’s great!

@LilliePad: good lord i didnt know that! i wonder if she does? she must do cos shes into history and read some book with the name in there, bet it was greek mythology haha!

I like the name from a mythology standpoint. I think it is really pretty. That being said, I would totally roll my eyes at someone naming their kid this. Everyone is trying too hard to be sooo unique.

@nearlymarriedlass: Yeah, I mean she was kidnapped by Hades and forced into it, but still…Queen of the underworld…
@whoa_its_ash: This (about trying too hard)

Yeah, she was wife of Hades and Goddess of the Underworld. It would be a cute name for a cat or a dog, but I would never name a child that.

It makes me think of a medicine or some kind of natural gas, so I’m going to vote no. I also thought it was pronounced purse-o-phone… The poor kid will have to be correcting spelling and pronounciation her whole life.

I voted hell no. I can just hear the other kids at school.

@nearlymarriedlass: she is taken to hades (the afterworld, not hell) to be his wife. But she is a gentle presence there. She is the daughter of the goddess of the harvest. When she is taken to the underworld, her mother makes the world in winter, and a deal is brokered that she will live in the underworld for half of the year, and with her mother for the other half, which is the reason for the seasons. Its not like she does anything bad or is a cold presence. I wouldn’t change the spelling as the point of the name is its classical origins.
I know people who named their kid this, with percy as a nickname.

@whoa_its_ash: Seriously! Everytime I see someone put an unnecessary Y in a kids name I want to scream. lol. I don’t understand it when people change regular names like Nathan to Nathyn. You are making your kids life soooo hard. If you really want to be unique be unique, but don’t give them a plain old common name and make them suffer from a life of correcting peoples spelling

I don’t because it will almost never be pronounced right! Also, my name is Stephanie & Persephone rhymes with that, but isn’t spelled even remotely similar which I think would cause the general population (as in people not familiar with Greek mythology or baby names) to mispronounce it ..at least in America.

It’s ok. I like a heck of a lot better than Libby-Kate, oh dear. But I’m also not huge on it.
ETA: it is spelled correctly, please don’t encourage her to misspell it. No kid deserves a misspelt name.
