When I think of dad I think if the song Ventura highway. We’d always listen to it while riding around on his motorcycle or in his old car. He’s very reserved and not big on showing emotions so I don’t want anything mushy. Is that an OK song to dance to? My fi thinks it’s a strange choice.

I haven’t heard the song but I just checked the lyrics. While it’s not a traditional choice, it’s certainly not inappropriate. I wanted to dance to Cats in the Cradle because it was my favourite song when I was a kid – now THAT would have been a bad choice, hahaha.
If it reminds you of your dad, I say go for it!

I love Ventura Highway. I used to listen to America all the time – I think I had their greatest hits CD – in the 70s. If in doubt, about any lyrics, check-out various instrumental versions. Cats in the Cradle would have sounded gorgeous in a string/orchestral version. Some people have no clue what the lyrics are, to some songs, and they usually only give you a few minutes to dance, anyway, not the full-length version.
My girls picked country music songs and I don’t think anyone in the family prefers country music. They had live bands and the songs were on their playlists. The lyrics were perfect, for each of them “I Loved her First,” and “In my Daughter’s Eyes.” I wish they had special, individualized songs, like the OP and prior poster.

I adore that it has a special meaning to the two of you. That seems so much more memorable than just picking a song because it seems more appropriate. Go with what means the most to you both. I actually told my dad he needed to pick our father daughter dance song. That way I know it’ll be special for the both of us. I have an idea of what he would pick
