I honestly think that it's a great dress, and not "too sexy," but it might be a little unflattering on any of the BMs who are not quite toned in the stomach. The only thing I'd be worried about is sizing and fit, what is NN's return/exchange policy like?
I wouldn't be offended at all from the description. None of us are perfect, and I think that more dresses are coming with flattering fits nowadays. Also, and important thing to remember with BM dresses is that alterations are probably going to be necessary for at least one of your girls (I say this as a 5' former BM!) so I'd at least look into a place that will do alterations for a reasonable rate if you're going through a non-bridal store like NN.
To be honest, I am not a fan of the dress as a BM dress and I voted neutral for all. It's a cute dress for going out or maybe for a RD. And what color were you thinking? If you wanted to go with NN, there are tons of great dresses there that seem more BM to me...
Love these:
I think it's a pretty dress and even though it looks super snug on the model, i wonder how it fits in real life. Personally iw ouldn't care aobut the spandex fit-control. Everyone wears undergarments nowadays and I think it's genius that the dresses have it built in! I'd see how they feel about it. They may not want to wear a sexier dress and might want an a-line. I think the size 6 and 8 girls are probably just fine but i wonder about the girl who's a 14...i have a friend who's a 14 and she'd never ever wear that dress. she'd be terribly uncomfortable in it. I guess it really depends on your friends. I don't think bustiness is going to be an issue--i think it's hips. This dress will either be very flattering on them or will make them look very pear-shaped. Do any of them wear pencil skirts? I think this is the same effect. Also can they dance in this?
I agree with lilyfaith, this dress might be unflattering in the stomach. I am also very "hippy" and this would look terrible on my hips! However I don't think it is a bad bridesmaid's dress or "too sexy". As long as it looks fine on your ladies it should fly.
I don't think its too sexy either. In fact I think it probably flatters all the girls.
I wouldn't be comfortable wearing this and I am pretty thin. Stretch satin is very difficult to pull off without looking trashy or cheaply made.
I would be seriously annoyed if I was told to wear it. I am modest enough that I don't care for such form fitting dresses and I am not a big girl, but I am a D-cup. I would feel completely on display.
I'm pretty much on the same page with the others...it's not necessarily too sexy, it would probably just be very unflattering and uncomfortable.
If any of your ladies are self-conscious about their tummies, I think you can find a better dress for them to wear.
hmmm... so, ironically, nobody agrees with my roommate, but nobody likes the dress either.
I suspect that BM dresses are going to be my biggest stressor of wedding planning, because I'm out of my league - as a straight, hipless, waistless, bustless girl, I'm trying to find a dress for 2 curvy and one bigger girls... gees.
Okay then, back to the search. :)
ETA: two things I liked about this dress (you know, if anyone with curves wants to make suggestions): it doesn't look like the typical cupcake-frosting-butt-bow-BM dress that will NEVER get worn again, no matter what the bride deludes herself into thinking; and it's under $100.
@daydreamwanderer - have you asked your BMs to scope out some looks and perhaps run them by you? it might take some of the stress off!!
@krissy - no, it's too early for that... no ring, haven't asked them, hehe.
I'm trying to decide on a color scheme, and keep thinking if I can just find the right dress, I can use that as a base point. Plus dresses are one thing I can REALLY look at online for hours, since I'm pre-planning from overseas.
Do you want them all in the same dress? The same color? What are you parameters? Let us know and you can bet we will find you something!
@daydreamwanderer - gotcha.
i am not overseas, but my bridesmaids are everywhere, so what we did was actually talk over the internet while looking at a few websites and we came to a mutual decision on a dress that everyone loved. quite ironically in my situation, i am the curvy one and they are the thin, hipless ones...well, besides the one BM that is pregnant...she's still hipless, but yeah...preggo belly. =)
@jocelyn :) thanks :)
I would love to have them all in the same dress, or at least exactly the same color (different shades of the same color are not my thing); they're all caucasions, one's dirty blonde, one's light brunette and one's a very pink skinned light-red head.
If I can't find anything in the long run, I'll just scrap the whole color scheme and do brown/white with whatever accents make me happy, and let the girls choose whatever dress they want, as long as it's bright and cheerful looking, since we're getting married in the dead of winter in the north :(
@daydreamwanderer - the ring's not on my finger yet, either, because we're making payments, but I still asked one of my BM's opinions! She's dying for us to get married sooner rather than later, and was going on about how she wants to be MOH for me because she's known me the longest. She's a little bit of a diva, and she vetoed the first dress I liked! I listened because it didn't come in a wide enough variety of sizes anyway, and I'm a little worried about the possibility of FSIL (already the biggest BM sizewise) being pregnant when we get married. She's said she wants to wait "a few years" after they get married, which will be right around our wedding.
One thing I learned from BM dress shopping with FSIL's other BMs - a lot of girls are really specific. Maybe you can ask each of them what's important to them in a BM dress they'd feel comfortable in and go from there?
Since it's the style of the dress you like the most, how about something similiar but not so snug?
This one is cute....and even tho it is still stretch-satin, it's got a more flattering cut to it.
This one's pretty too: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3029339/0~2376776~2374327~2374331~6014185?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6014185&P=1

Ok i know this is jersey, but it's kinda dress looking! i like the illusion wrap. It's sexy but sweet =]
If I were a bridesmaid asked to wear that dress, I'd hope I had at least a y ear to spend doing intervals, lunges and crunches galore. I'm 5'10", small bust, size 8-10, and I would be really scared of a dress like that (even with the support it boasts to have). That said, I'd wear it for the bride...but it doesn't look like it'd be flattering.
i like the ones ejs has posted, with the ruching and gathers. I think the problem with the one you posted is that it just isn't very forgiving-- it shows all the lumps and bumps, even on the model. Having something with a bit of ruching/draping over the tummy makes me less afraid of the lumps and pantylines that would be on display... :)
This one is over $100 but has the same feel as the one you showed and looks really flattering for all types:
This one is cheaper.
This one is extremely flattering and comes in a few cute colors.
:) thank you both EJS and Jocelyn -- I'll just have to keep scouring the stores, hehe, watching for new stuff to come out. I guess somewhere in my mind, I keep thinking, "eventually I'll see a dress that is perfect and I will love it." but that's probably not gonna happen.
Joce (can I call you Joce? I love shortening names), do they carry larger sizes? I used to shop there in high school, but as a Gap size 8, I wore a L or XL at F21. I can't imagine finding anything to fit my MOH there. :/
Maybe I should check out Charlotte Russe Windsor though... (sorry, they're next to each other in my mall)
Forever21 will not fit 2 of your bridesmaids...there is no way in heck i fit into their stuff anymore. I'm 5'10", a size 8, and busty. It's just sad going in there and trying on stuff....i'ts so teenY! It's teen-fit and your bms sound more womanly =]
ejs, do you know if Nordstroms is pretty good about carrying their online stock in stores? I've got BMs in three different states and would love to let them try on whatever I pick (if I pick), and I do love a lot of their dresses.
Sometimes. It depends on how big the nordstroms is. Unfortunately, I do end up buying MOST of my dresses online (especially special occassion ones) but, they have an EXCELLENT return poicy (i say you buy lots in a size, etc) and then return the ones that don't fit. Also, they are good about shipping to the store if they can. With the holiday season coming, i'd imagine they'll have MORE in stock. It's kinda hit and miss....
personally i'm always impressed with how the suzi chin dresses fit. it is always very true to size for me.
That is the exact type of dress I'd be thrilled to wear. However, it's hard to comment on if you're friends would like it because I don't have the same type of body. For what it's worth - I have a large chest and I think that the straight cut on the dress neckline is perfect. I also love that you can wear a normal bra with that dress.
I'm a lover of pencil skirts, but that said I have normal-ish hips so I'm not sure about how more hippy girls would feel about that.
It is lovely - and looks great on the model. I wouldn't be offended by the description, however, I think it'd just be best to go ahead and ask the bridesmaids what they think!
Have you looked on Bluefly? Their selection can get pricey, but there are some steals.
Would you consider picking the color and fabric, and then letting them pick the style/cut they feel the most comfortable in?
Too Sexy? I don't think it's "Too Sexy." I don't think it will work for all 3 however... What about choosing a color/length and letting the girls choose the dress?
It's not too sexy - but it appears to be very form-fitting, and I'd think it will maximize your mid-section - which will likely be an issue for the larger BM's.
I love this dress.. I think it sounds like it would look good on all of them..
I am a size 18 with a modest bust line and big hips.. and I think that dress would look great on my curves.. not make them look too big but just very curvy and give me a sexy silhouette without showing a lot of skin.
Also I love the fact that it could easily be worn again.
not too sexy, but I don't think this works on all body types - the pencil skirt bottom would make me feel super hippy and make me feel like my butt was really standing out and I am a size 6....with the body types you have I would think something more a-line would work...the best way though is to get the girl you think will be hardest to fit to help try dresseson!

I found a dress I kind of like for BM dresses, but my roommate says it's too sexy. Personally, I'd like my girls to feel and look good... I haven't officially asked anyone yet, but have 3 girls in mind with very different body types. Do you think this dress would look okay on each of them?
A: 5' 6", size 16 (although she's lost some weight so she might be a 14 now), but not overly busty, very modest
J: 5' 5", size 6 with major curves, wears a C cup
K: 5' 4", size 8 with hips to be proud of and an average bust, very independent, free spirit
Also, how would you feel about being asked to wear a dress that's advertised as having, "Stretch satin sheath with built-in power-mesh slip to control midriff to knee. Silicone lace gripper edge at hem keeps slip from riding up. Cotton/polyester with spandex for 2-way stretch support and a smooth fit." ? I like the dress because of how it looks, NOT because I think any of my girls need the support.
