@the_newlymintedmrs-s17:  he should surrender the animal to a shelter immediately!! They may be able to save the dog.

This is awful. People should NOT have animals if they cannot afford to take care of them. And Fyi, it’s extreme animal cruelty to allow this dog to suffer and die locked in a basement. You should make an anonymous call and report this guy to animal control.

That is infuriating.  Heck no I wouldn’t do that.  The shot to euthanize isn’t THAT expensive.  The medicine probably cost more. I don’t know what I’d do if I were really in your situation, but the first thing I’d consider is doing some research on reporting suspision of animal abuse.  I don’t know if anything could be done, but it’d ease my concience a little.

omg this is unbelievable.  also, i would probably have lost my sh*t on my friend if she said that to me.  YES I DO KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO IN THAT SITUATION.  I HAVE A GOD DAMN HEART.

That makes me sick. If it was my brother I would tell him I’ll come get the dog and do whatever needs to be done. Or I’d call the humane society on him.

Totally fucking cruel. That dude should be locked in the basement to die on his own IMHO. If one of my babies were that sick and I couldn’t afford it, I would do everything in my power to get them better, even try to work out a payment plan for treatment. If not even that, that jerk should at least be a comfort to the animal that provides him unconditional love.

Maybe it’s just me but I’d call animal control on him. What a sorry way for a loving animal to live out her last days, all alone in a basement bc her owner is a shit head. Holy crap i’m mad now.

I have no problem caring for a sick animal if the owner can’t/won’t care for it.

@the_newlymintedmrs-s17:  call the spca/humane society/animal control/the local equivalent ASAP! He should surrender the dog so they can either treat it or at least put it down humanely. That is incredibly cruel and heartless to lock the  dog away and deny it any affection or care as it suffers and dies. This makes me sick.

This makes me very angry. I would call animal control. Even if they can’t save the dog, they can humanely euthanize him.

That is disgusting. If you’re going to let your dog (not YOU I know, but “you”, you know?) die the least you could do is search the couch cushions for $40-100 to have him properly euthanized. In fact I bet the vet would agree to euthanize at no charge if he knew the dog was dying a slow painful death in a flippin’ basement.

What this person is doing is cruel and neglectful. I’d hope they could be charged with animal abuse.

I would not have anything nice or comforting to say to your friend. It would probably end up being the end of our friendship, because I wouldn’t have a hard time saying what is on my mind and I wouldn’t bother trying to say it nicely, either. I know it’s not her dog but her attitude is telling enough.

Why bother with the medicine if you aren’t going to care for the animal to give them a chance to power through this? That seems even more evil, as if they’re trying to extend its suffering.

@the_newlymintedmrs-s17:  if I couldn’t afford vet bills, I wouldn’t of gotten the dog in the first place! He needs to kicked in the throat for even saying such an awful thing… And doing so. I would def call animal control for abuse!!!! At least they will be able to treat the poor dog! What a shit head!!!

I’m absolutely disgusted reading this! He should be locked in a basement and hopefully he’ll just peacefully pass away after a couple days, honestly what a jackass!

several years ago we had a beautiful dog that ran out the front door and was hit by a car. I rushed him to the bet and he was in rough shape. She told me straight up that it would be a minimum of $9000-$10000 to get him fixed up, and their was no garuntees that he would make it even after that. We were in a tough spot financially and we just couldn’t swing it, so we did the only humane thing left to do. We had him out down 🙁 we didn’t take him home and let him suffer, we didn’t dump our dog off at the nearest shelter (that is disgusting also if you ask me). He was our dog and we did the best we could for him.

When you sign up for a pet, it’s for THEIR life! Not whenever they become an inconvenience! I get not being able to afford the treatment/tests, sometimes that happens especially if it’s very expensive. But he dog is still your responsibility, and anything less then putting him down (at the vet)  in this situation is absurd and pathetic.

    scum.

This is utter cruelty! If he can’t afford veterinary treatment surely there are shelters or some sort of options for free/very much reduced cost treatment?

Over here you’d go to the PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals) but then my vet wouldn’t refuse to treat an animal either. They’d work out a payment plan if the owner really couldn’t afford investigative treatment that could save a dog’s life.

Anyone who locked a dog in a basement and left it to die would be prosecuted by the RSPCA and most likely banned from keeping animals for life. If I were you, I’d call the American equivalent right now because this poor dog needs to get to a place of safety immediately.

I am so incensed that I could get on a plane right now, remove the dog and give the owner a damned good thrashing!!

@the_newlymintedmrs-s17:   That is hideously cruel – to let a dog suffer and die alone in the basement??  Horrible.  Why not take it to the shelter now and give the dog a chance to be loved and cared for?  If the vet knows the situation, perhaps he would take the dog in?  Or one of the vet techs??

@the_newlymintedmrs-s17:  I was in tears by the time I finished reading your post. Those people are fucking vile to let that happen to a helpless animal. If I were you, I’d take that dog myself to the vet to at least have it euthanized in a humane way before dying a slow, terrible death.

Then I might call the necessary authorities on those people. Just awful.
