I am new to an area and have never needed to go to the Doctor here before. I called one this morning to discuss what my next steps should be after finding out I was pregnant this past weekend. They said they don't want to schedule anything with me until 10-12 weeks?? I know I have read other ladies go to the doctor as soon as they find out. I was a little shocked. Is this normal?

I didn't experience implamantation bleeding but from time to time I have cramps. Not terrible. I am just so paranoid about everything now and trying to relax myself. I guess I would just feel better if I had an appointment sooner so they could tell me everything is coming along great.

Then make an appt. Especially for first time moms it's not uncommon for them to want an appt quite soon, especially if they've had anything they feel is out of the ordinary. I'm sure they won't deny you an appt if you ask for it.

They can't tell very much outside of blood tests in the first month or two so early appts are more discussion based which takes more time usually for the doctor. Don't worry about what they say, if you want an appt, get one.

I didn't go until 10 weeks. As far as I know unless you have problems that's pretty standard.

With both of my kids that was the doctors' policy, unless there was cause for concern

It's normal. Some women go at 6 or 8 weeks then panic when the Doppler doesn't pick up a heartbeat, when it's usually too early to get a heartbeat at that point. Usually by 10-12 weeks you can pick up a heartbeat, so they tend to schedule women then so as not to freak them out if there's no heartbeat and things like that. You can push for one if you really want, but there's really not much to discuss before 10-12 weeks. Eat healthy, take a prenatal vitamin. That's about it.

Well my first maternity doc appt was at 10 weeks. I went to the doctor before hand, because they did a 6 week ultrasound to see how far along I was. But as for maternity docs thats pretty standard, Cramping is also very normal, your uterus is stretching.

hey i just called my doctor today to and they wont see me until august 2 which i will be around almost 9 weeks. i thought tehy would make me wait 10-12 and im acaully kinda nervous that it will be to early to see the heart beat and i will be a nervous wreck.  But i went o my gp today and he ordered blood work to confirm pregancy and to check my levels (i havent had blod work in a couple years) plus i needed a physial.  it wasnt a necessary appointment but i got to ask him a list of concerns i had which made me feel better.  my doc said cramping was complety normal and that its just your body and uterus adjusting/ streching. i also have cramps off and on and im about as far as long as you.

I've heard that's normal. My doctor will see us for a orientation pretty early, but they don't even do any bloodwork or anything before that, just tell you about their practice, the hospital, and dos and dont's of pregnancy. If you're really paranoid and have cramps, I would see if you can get in early. I had spotting before my first apt. so I called, they didn't get back to me fast enough (I was scared and impatient) so I just went in and waited until they could see me.

I went to the doctor at 6 weeks and a few days. They confirmed the pregnancy, gave me info, and gave me the paper to get my lab work done. I go back at around 8 weeks for a ultrasound and pap.

I went at 6 weeks to confirm, and to get the requisition form for standard blood tests. My next appointment isn't unti 12 weeks, and we get to hear the heartbeat then.

Unless you are undergoing fertility treatment, 10-12 weeks is pretty standard for a first appointment. Like others have said they really can't pick up a heartbeat until then unless they have state of the art equipment (like you'd find in a reproductive specialist's office). Most offices aren't going to shell out the money when the equipment they have does the job. Don't worry.

Also, cramping at the beginning of pregnancy is pretty normal. You shouldn't worry about that unless you are bleeding with the cramping. If that happens you should go to your doctor right away.

From what I know, it depends on the doctor.  You could request a blood test and some general info, but other than that there is not much they can do for you until 8 wks anyways.  No harm in asking to come in earlier though!

I had a miscarriage a few mos. ago.  My doc told me that when pregnant again, not to be concerned with light cramping, since it's quite common in early pregnancy.  She said cramping + blood = cause for concern, though.  If you experience that, call your doc.

Mine was a bit funny because my OB and I knew I'd need to have a CVS test scheduled and done before or by 12 wks. So I had extra appts and ultrasounds early on to confirm the pregnancy & heartbeat + date the pregnancy... basically make sure everything was a go for genetic testing. So even though I didn't follow standard procedure for them, I know that FWIW, the OB/Midwife practice I go to require you to come in and take a pregnancy test with them 1st. Then, after you get the results, you can schedule your 1st prenatal visit for 8 wks. That 8 wk appt is just a visit with the midwife to go over nutrition, take your weight, etc. No checking for heartbeat, etc. That doesn't come in until the 10 wk exam where they confirm the heartbeat with an ultrasound in office (so not a good high resolution ultrasound, but good enough to see the heartbeat).

Thanks everyone for responding! Especially to the cramping... I know I have read online its normal but it does give comfort when those that have seen an actual doctor says it ok. Still cramping from time to time but no bleeding. i guess I will just wait till I am 12 wks along. I feel like the weeks wont go fast enough!
