At the end of July I switched from Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo (which I had been on for 7+ years) to the Skyla IUD (smaller version of Mirena). I was supposed to get my period that week I had the IUD inserted. I only spotted for the day of insertion, which is normal, but have not had a period since, when before I was really regular. I know it’s normal to have your periods disappear after being on Skyla/Mirena for awhile, just didn’t think it would happen this soon. Or maybe my body is still adjusting?
Has anyone made the switch and experienced this before?

It’s normal. I always had regular periods prior to getting on the IUD. As soon as I got on, I had spotting here and there, sometimes for two weeks straight. Now, I just don’t get my period. It’s scary at first because even though being on your period sucks, having it is really reassuring so to not have it at all freaked me out at first. But eventually, you learn to love not having your period around. Well, at least for me. 🙂

@miss_leafheart: phew, okay that makes me feel better! So strange not getting it, though!

@kat912: The Skyla/Mirena stops periods and pregnancy by thinning the uterine lining, so you may find over time that you stop bleeding altogether. I haven’t had a period in 4.5 years (heaven!). It is weird at first, but once you get used to not having a period, it will be awesome! I do take a pregnancy test from time to time, apparently having an IUD can mimic pregnancy symptoms (tricking your body into feeling pregnant). Nothing is 100%, but if you have an IUD and happen to get pregnant, there is a higher risk of an ectopic. I love the Mirena though, no undesirable side effects at all!
