This is a totally random post, as most of mine are, but I have to ask you bees this. It’s also Monday and that lovely time of the month so I get all tangled with my thoughts…
Think back to this year’s super bowl and the VW bug commercial….and then read this article. Did you think the VW beetle commercial was racist? If you did, how come? I mean it wasn’t my favorite commercial but it was ok, the last thing that crossed my mind while watching it was racism. Maybe I’m just too easy going? I don’t know. I’ve seen commercials about non-Italian people speaking in a made up Italian accent, and no one seems to mind…is this any different? Just curious what you guys think!

@Mimoza: I’m not Jamaican so maybe it’s not for me to say, but I thought that it was pretty racist.

I have a friend who is Jamaican, and he thought people getting up in arms over it was ridiculous. He also makes the point that people assuming only black people can be Jamaican was way more racist than pretending to have an accent. (If that’s what the article says, my apologies. I just wanted to leave this quick comment.)

It made me smile the whole time lol I dont think it was racist at all. Jamaican accents have always been known as the ”happy” sounding kind of accent. Besides, the fact that a WHITE person is embracing the culture is less racist and it is in no way making fun of it.
I think its ridiculous for anyone to think too deep about this and call it racist or wrong.
Bob Marely would have loved it.

@HisMoon: That’s a good point. I have Jamaican friends too, and none of them care.

I’m not Jamaican but my family is from another island and my best friend and lots of close friends are Jamaican. Nobody was offended that I know.

Racist is the wrong word. It’s not an issue of race. However, the commercial does perpetuate a cultural stereotype, albeit a pretty benign one. Still, some people don’t like to be generalized and may find it offensive. It didn’t offend me, but I thought it was kind of stupid.

It seems to me that most people that feel it is racist arent Jamaican or black or any connection to it so I think people are just too critical.

I think the ad was taken way out of context.

Just to ad to my post,
When Im in a good mood or if my friends and I are all partying, the Jamaican accent does come out.
My friend: ”want another drink?”
Me: ”YAAA MONNN”
LOL seriously, it IS the FEEL GOOD ACCENT that people of all races enjoy.

@Mimoza: I’m Jamaican and no it wasn’t racist. Everyone is too sensitive these days. I thought it was cute and his accent was okay…although the people in the car with him at the end were pretty horrible! BTW there are plenty of white, asian, mixed, etc Jamaican people so therefore it’s not far out to see a white person with Jamaican accent, and therefore not racist.
