I’ve been sick the past few days, but not with the usual cold symptoms (no sniffles, cough, etc.). I’ve had a mild (for me) headache, a constant burning sensation (a little bit of pressure) right in the center of my chest, and difficulty swallowing, as well as a sore throat. I’ve been really tired, too. My throat felt sort of swollen and irritated first, before the chest pain started.
It got bad enough that I called in sick yesterday (which I NEVER do), and finally went to urgent care last night. My strep test came back negative, so they took cultures to send out for more tests, but in the meantime, they “diagnosed” me with heartburn and told me to take Zantac… even though the medicine they gave me didn’t work.
Is this really heartburn for 2.5 days (and still going)? I’ve never had heartburn, but I’m finding this hard to believe.

LadyBear: No one on here in their right mind is going to tell you that you do or do not have heartburn or cardiac pain.
One way that heart burn and cardiac pain are sometimes differentiated is if the person swallows some liquid antacid like Maalox or Mylanta. If it takes the pain away , it’s not likely cardiac pain, but it doesn’t rule it out.
Follow up with your family doctor if the Zantac doesn’t help.

LadyBear: I’m a GI nurse and it does sound like heartburn? Which can mimick other things but if it is heartburn than the medication and avoiding vwryain food. (I’m sure he told you about) should do the trick rather quickly. But if you feel generally out of sorts or feel strongly this is sokething else then see another doctor. It couldn’t hurt.

I’m no doctor, but my very similar symptoms were heartburn. Lay off the acidic foods, red meat, soda, alcohol, and carbs for a few days and see if that helps. Advair was the only medicine that helped me.if that doesn’t work, ask your GP for a referral to a specialist.

No one here could possibly know the answer to this. Go see another doctor if you aren’t happy with the diagnosis.

The urgent care doc gave me a dose of Maalox to no effect. I don’t expect a diagnosis from Weddingbee – just curious as to whether it sounded like heartburn to others.
It’s been about two days since I saw the doctor – the chest pain has slowly receded and I just have a sore throat now that seems to be on the mend, too. I never bothered to take Zantac, since the Maalox didn’t work, and I was pretty sure the doctor was wrong. I think I just had a virus.

LadyBear: Zantac and Maalox work in entirely different ways. Maalox neutralizes stomach acid. Zantac is an acid reducer.

Of course no one on the internet can be sure, but it sounds like heartburn to me too. Just because the Maalox didn’t work doesn’t mean that it isn’t heartburn or that something else won’t work. As julies1949 said, different medications work in totally different ways.

I was incorrectly diagnosed with GERD a while ago. Your symptoms seem to be more consistent with acid reflux than mine though.
