Is this reception venue's deposit (50%) a little too high?

@Mokara:  Wow, that sounds high to me- we had a restaurant reception, total bill of around $9K, and they asked for only $200 to hold the date for us. We then paid in a couple installments with the final balance due the night of the reception.

It doesn’t hurt to ask!

I’d at least ask. Our venue food/drink and decor came out to about $12K and our deposit was $750. 50% is due 3 months before the wedding though.

Our deposit was $300 on a $1500 bill!

So that does seem pretty steep!

The venue we have our hearts set on (that we’re looking at this weekend) asks for a $2,500 deposit, regardless of how much you end up spending. I think overall, that’ll be like a 16% deposit or something for us, so yes, 50% does seem high!

I’d say it never hurts to ask about a smaller deposit, but don’t be surprised if they stay firm on that amount.

@Mokara:  our first venue was a $3000 deposit (our total there would have been 10k) ….it seemed a little high, but we paid it anyway because it was the place we wanted:) and we would have been paying the $$ anyway….just a little sooner!

We had a non-refundable deposit of $2500.  That secured the date.  4 months before the wedding, 50% of the estimated total is due.  Final amounts due 10 days before the wedding.  Our final venue bill will be costing around 35k, so that’s only around 7%….we could never afford to put 50% down right away!

Also…. you can totally bargain with vendors!!  They’re sales people and always have a little wiggle room.  Some big name vendors might have really strict policies while the smaller companies are willing to bend a little. But you can certainly ask!

We asked our venue to do installments on the down payment.  We took a whole year to pay the entire deposit off.  A big reason for the long engagement for us was that our parents both wanted time to save money.  If installments would help definitely ask!

Our venue did a 50% down payment, most places we looked at did so.

We had a nonredundable deposit for our venue, which was $9K something (33%). So yeah, maybe a little higher (percentage wise) than normal? At least ask and see what they say.

ours was a $7000 food minimum also, they wanted a $1000 deposit to hold the date.  50% was due 3 months out, and the balance was due 3 days prior to the event.

My venue required $3k to secure the date and then half the estimated cost 1 month later.

We just had to pay our deposit today at 25% $5,034.  I guess each place has their own rules for securing the date?
