Funny you asked this, I've been debating the exact same question... I'm also a dancer and when I was a kid I performed a dance to that song that my dad really loved, so the song has special meaning for us. But even after reading through the lyrics I can't quite decide for sure exactly what it's about or whether it's inappropriate!
I vote no. My mother was a dance teacher and I took for about 20 years. That song is not about a friendship or relationship appropriate for a father daughter.
How about something and choreographed? Know you can 'swing' that right?
good fun song if you want to get things moving:
Dancin' in the Streets
and here are 10 more sentimental classics (voted on by dads for father daughter dances):

Two which might work for you well from this list are Frank Sinatra's version "The Way you Look Tonight" and "Unforgettable" duet by Natalie/Nat King Cole. Either of these would be gorgeous with a touch of choreography!
I voted "no" simply because I feel the song isn't quite appropriate. The "tiny dancer" part is nice but not so much the rest.
Thanks for the help bees! It probably isn't quite appropriate. My mother wants me to do Lionel Ritchie's "Ballernia Girl." I am considering it though it is quite possibly one of the cheesiest songs of all time.
The way you look tonight by Frank Sinatra just might be better. :)
Hmm, I don't think it's that creepy. The one line that gets me is "now she's in me, always with me." Yeah, it's a close one. Probably no one will be listening to the lyrics, but if it's going to bother you, then I say go with something else. What a shame, though! Elton John is the best. :)
A really good father daughter song is "Turn Around" by Harry Belafonte.
It's very touching, and nice and slow for your dad who is already a big guy, but then is going to have a lot of emotions effecting him then too.

Hi bees!
I am a ballet/modern dancer and I teach and perform professionally. I thought a nice song for a father/daughter dance might be "Tiny Dancer." But there's that line "No one here, lying here beside you" and something like "And I said softly, slowly" hmmm..."Hold me closer tiny dancer, count the headlights on the highway"
I think father daughter dances are kind of inherently creepy but I guess that I have to do it. (My dad would be hurt if I skipped it). I would really love to choreograph something cool, but my father is a man 6'2", rather large 220-240lbs I think and not that light on his feet.
Any thoughts, suggestions?
