Just submitted a custom design order 2 days ago. Today decided to contact them to add some side stones to make the ring perfect. They’ve been so nice until tonight. Their response was something like “it’ causes a problem because we already have a designer working on this”. The CADs are not finished even, so I don’t know how this causes problems. It’s not like they already made the molds or cast the rings. I did I say I was happy to pay any additional costs.
Shouldn’t a customer be able to customize and tweak their ring design right up until it’s ready to be made?
The whole interaction just sits wrong with me…

I have no experience with custom but have read where other bees made changes all the way through. Sounds odd the way they responded.. I would talk to a manager.

Usually you can make changes at any point. That’s the whole point of custom. So it’s exactly how you want it. even when a cad is made they will still change it if it’s not exactly what you love…. I think I’d contact another jeweler.

Seemed odd to me too. If you don’t want to deal with custom work, don’t offer the service. Kind of took the wind out of my sails, I was so excited about the minor change. Now I’m kind of bummed. “We’ll check and see how far along they are tomorrow”.
And? Even if that CAD is finished, so what? Do another one. It’s my money and my ring.

What company are you working with. Sounds horrible. You should be able to make changes until you are happy with your ring.

We did a custom ring and he was told me to email him as much as I wanted with as many details as I wanted. Then I got to try on a wax model and was allowed to ask for whatever changes.. after that point it was going to be cast in gold so I had to submit my changes before that point.
It sounds like they want the $$$ from a custom job, but just want it to be easy and straightforward and not have to deal with what maing a custom ring entails.

I don’t throw hissyfits to get what I want very often. I use them sparingly when I’m feeling particularly ….ummmm….insistent on getting my way. That being said, I have taken a lot of cues dealing with doctors and how they ‘communicate’. what I have learned is that a little well-placed, polite intimidation goes a long way sometimes.
If you are paying for customization, I would be very clear what I expect by ‘paying for customization’. I would be very persistant and very clear as to what I thought I was paying for. Sounds like maybe you just happened to speak to the wrong person, who maybe doesn’t have that much authority to call the shots with the jewelers. Ask to speak to the more senior person and make some polite demands.

Things have worked out fine since I posted that. We actually changed the CAD for a 2nd time. No further issues and rings are now being made. It’s now just hard waiting two weeks until they are done. 🙂
