I am in a bit of a hard place when it comes to my MUA! I found her on theknot vendor search and loved her work – she also had great reviews! I booked her for my trial and date (only a 60$ deposit which comes off of the total of $400!)
The trial was super sketchy. She is just starting her business and works out of her house, NBD to me she said her studio was in her home. Well I showed up last week and her house looked like a bomb went off! She led me back to her “studio” which was actually just her garage. She was also getting over a bad cold and was coughing and sneezing everywhere all while touching my face, etc! Ew! On top of that the “studio” was a filthy mess, too!
She did a nice job on my hair and make-up but she kept saying “were just playing around, I ll make it perfect on the big day” well I went to her not knowing for sure what hairstyle I wanted and I still don’t know because we only messed with one style! I emailed her a few days ago (haven’t heard back) kindly asking if we could meet again and re do my hair. I just feel like it is total BS to not have walked out of a trial run with a working hairstyle as when I booked the trial she told me to come with ideas, we would play with them and figure it out.
The other aspects that were un professional led me to contact other vendors and I could easily part with my lost $60 deposit and still come out on top with another artist since she is so expensive. The other aspect that irritated me is I saw on her FB page she has winter specials on all packages until February but she didn’t bother to give me that option since I didn’t find her on FB. Maybe all my other vendors are just super ethical, but if any of them were offering specials they TOLD me, didn’t wait for me to mention a special I saw Or not give me that pricing since I didn’t mention it. Ugh.
advice? I am torn because I know she’s talented but the trashy studio, coughing all over me, and not walking out of the trial with an actual idea of what I would look like day-of have me wondering what to do. Oh, and even if I do go back for another run at the hair (again, haven’t heard back!) she lives 2.5 hours from me! What a waste of time!

I say suck up the $60 and find a new artist, a leave a comment about her under vendor reviews in the knot as well(if possible)! She probably pays for that advertising. She seems incredibly unprofessional and sneezing/coughing all over is so unhygienic I probably would’ve just walked out right then.

@PenelopetheBride: I am not even kidding the location was so sketchy (just her trashed house and garage in general) that when she left to get a glass of water for her coughing I grabbed my cell and put it in my pocket instead of my purse just in case! I didn’t get bad vibes from her, in fact she is very nice! But for the cost, not walking out with the finished product, and nt extending the winter specials to me I am skeptical – and still not gettin back to me about a re do on my hair! Ugh. I don’t get why she has good reviews! She does other MUA work, too for print! Blah. I think you’re right though!
Am I off here or ia a trial when you nail down pat your hair and make-up? Not leave hearing, “well look at these pictures and if you want to change anything tell me on the big day” she even left bobby pins exposed which made me mad. Why not just do it perfectly so I have faith you can do the same on my wedding day?!

@psb23: Yikes! Some major red flags there. I’d gladly give up the $60 and find a new MUA.

@psb23: I would definitely look elsewhere. There are plenty of talented hair and make up artists that are much more professional. The day of your wedding you want to be confident in all of your vendors, you’ll have enough to stress about.
I’m not sure if she was going to come to you on the day of, but if you were planning on going there, that’s a lot of filth when you want to feel pretty and clean! Plus, who knows if she won’t have round 2 of a cold and be hacking in your face… These winter months can getcha.
That’s what trial runs are for though! Just be thankful you found this out early and have the opportunity to find someone new. That sure would have been a disappointment to find out on the day of the wedding.

@psb23: Um I swear I went to the same vendor LOL! I had a really bad hair and make up trial too with a partnership. The trial was awful, the hair and markup disgusting and it was at the MUA’s house with a million cats running around. I was miserable by the end.
If you have doubts find someone else. On your wedding day you want to be 100% satisifed and sure of every single vendor you have hired.

The trial shouldn’t be a quick run of the day of look – the whole point of it is to do everything exactly like it will be done the day of. That way you can tweak what you like or don’t like. I would run for the hills and forget the $60. Scary!

Once she started coughing and sneezing on me I would have ran like hell out of there so fast! I say get another makeup artist!

A lot of one man shop venders use their homes to do their work (our cake baker being one) so that wouldn’t be to sketchy for me, but what gets me is that she is sick and didn’t let you know to possibly reschedule. Also, yes, a trial is for the full look. Why do a trial if it is half done…

Thanks for the responss, ladies! I appreciate it!
Update: She finally got back to me! She is saying if I want to do another run of my hair it will be $75 – which is the cost of a trial with her for hair. Thankfully the $60 I paid as a deposit went towards the full balance of 400$ and made it possible for me to do a trial solely on the deposit. The wedding date is wrong on my Bee username, though! It is actually at the end of January so I have been running around looking for someone else! So it looks like I lost $60 but oh well – I had a bad feeling just from our initial talking before the trial based on her spelling and grammar alone. I should have listened to my gut! I am so thankful to be more informed now and go into my next trial KNOWING that we need to do the whole thing, and if I am not loving it we will sit there and figure it out!

Yeah, I think for that much money she definitely needs to be more professional!
