I’m pretty sure there are a few Italian Bees around here and I would be really happy if someone has any insights about buying property in Italy. Of course I would hire a local realtor and lawyer (I hear this is necessary as a foreigner). But I would like to know a bit more about the process before going into it. Thus far I have started to read up on an English speaking Italian forum but tought maybe someone here could provide more of an insight. I did read that realtors often take advantage of foreigners who don’t speak the language.
While neither of us are Italian, Darling Husband is an EU citizen if that makes a difference. What I am really wondering is how are offers made? Can you offer under the asking price? If yes, what is a typical reduction? 10%? 20%? Do prices come down as a house is on the market longer or should I be able to make a lower offer if I see the apartment was for sale for over a year? Is there anything specific to the market in Italy I may not think about? Is 20% the typical down payment?
