I wish we were going to Italy for our honeymoon!  I have been to Italy (several years ago) and I have to say you must go to Venice.  It is one of the most romantic places I have ever been.  It gets crowded during the day (especially Piazza San Marco), but if you stay in Venice rather than on the mainland, you will have all the car free streets to yourself in the evening.  Gorgeous.

Rome is amazing, but be prepared for a big, bustling, hectic city.  It can be a bit overwhelming, so do your homework and take advantage of the staff at your hotel to help you organize your stay.  Rome is a one of a kind place and I definitely want to go back.  So much to see!

    Have a wonderful time!!

We love Rome!  Depending on the time of the year when you'll be in Italy, I would also highly recommend Cinque Terre.

Two restaurant tips for when you're in Rome:  1) Al Leoncino (right behind the Fendi Store, which is on Via del Corso) -- the pizza here is amazing (and cheap for Rome!).  Get there early because there's almost always a line!  2) We had a fantastic dinner at La Matricianella.  We were there for FI's b-day dinner.  Here's the website: http://www.matricianella.it/english/matricianella.html

Same with us, we leave Sept 10th. Our first part is on a cruise and then 4 days in Rome.

@ Luckily - Thank you for the suggestions.  And close to Fendi SCORE ;)

@Bruschetta - What type of clothes are you backing for this time of year?

I am soo darn excited!  I went shoe shopping for "comphy" walking shoes, and BOOO why must comfort be ugly?  Just gonna suck it up and make my feet happy. Sure there will be a lot of walking. Laughing

are you just going to rome or traveling a bit?  a few summers ago i went to italy and did cinque terre, florence, rome & capri... here are some of my suggestions for florence & rome:

While in Florence you need to go to the Uffizi (art museum)- i would definitely recommend the guided tour- the guides are sooooo konwledgable and you get to the cut the line which is sometimes 2 hours long to get into the museum, the Boboli gardens, and visit the Duomo (try to climb it too). Also make sure you hit up the markets, the ponte vecchio, the numerous plazas especially the Michelangelo which gives you a great view of the city. There is an amazing restaurant in Florence called Acqua al 2… near the Duomo I think.  Also, Grom is an AMAZING gelato place in Florence, you can't miss it!  Also, kinda cheesy but if you are on the Ponte Vecchio (the main bridge in Florence), couples put locks on the rails to ’secure their love’ (or something), but anyways - it could be really fun/romantic to bring your own lock and add it to the mass!!

address: Via della Vigna Vecchia 40r, Florence

Then we did 2 nights & 3 days in Rome. The parts of Rome I liked the best were eating at restaurants by the beautiful fountains and people watching on the Spanish Steps. If you are going to go to the Colosseum make sure you get the audio tour, it is very much worth it! There’s a fantastic little bar in Rome called Il Pane e Le Rose - it’s less than a mile from Vatican City. They often have live music, and it has an incredible atmosphere. It’s in a basement and very cavernous. The Pantheon is also really cool and right around the corner from it is an AWESOME gelato place called giolitti!

We're going to pack a variety -- lots of light stuff, but also a few pieces we can layer, and some garments in case of rain!

Rome holds a special place on my heart since that is where my FI proposed. He made it official in front of my favorite building the Victor Emmanuel Monument. It is a beautifully ornate building with large bronze statues on the roof. We did not know at the time, but after a little research on the building we found out that Italians call it the" wedding cake" , because it is such a large structure with multiple layers. This would make for a perfect photo op. You can spend months in Rome alone and not see everything.

We were in Italy last September.  The weather in Rome was Hot! I didn't take any shorts or skirts with me because I had read you couldn't show your knees inside the Vatican.  Which is true.  But I wish I would have just brought something to wear for that day only and then shorts the rest of the time.

We downloaded on our IPods walking audio tours.  That was the best thing we could have done.  We got a lot of information that we probably wouldn't have otherwise.

We did a day trip to Pompeii.  We both were disappointed in that because most of the aritfacts are in musuems now.  But it was neat to say you've been there.

We did a day trip to Pisa.  My favorite part of our trip.  We climbed to the top of the tower!  Got lots of cute pictures trying to push the tower over.  It was a very quaint little town where you could just stroll along and pop in and out of shops.  Rome is very busy.  Think NY.  Lots of little cars/bikes everywhere.

My brother and his wife did the cruise/Italy tour.  Their favorite thing was the Isle of Capri.  There is a blue grotto there that is gorgeous.  They talked about it lots.

I loved our trip to Italy and can't wait to go back and do Milan, Venice and Florence!

One more thing... if you're Catholic or just a history buff, don't miss the Necropolis tour at the Vatican!  It's AMAZING!  Definitly book it ahead of time (you can't just show up and buy tickets).  I had to email in a request for the "Scavi Tour" (scavi@fsp.va).  The process is a little antiquated, but the tour really was very cool... you get to see the escavation work for "City of the Dead" upon which the Vatican was built!

i spent 3 weeks in italy in 2004. went to venice, rome, florence, pisa, pompei, and the amalfi coast (positano, capri, sorrento------------GORGEOUS!). it's quite an exciting adventure. there's lots to see and do in rome and florence, so like others have said, try to get a vacation in your vacation (that's why we spent time in the amalfi coast). i have a mad, mad crush on italy and can't wait to go back and do the north!:-)

I have been to Rome (multiple times for business and pleasure), Florence, Pisa, Venice and Milan. By far, I would recommend Rome if you are planning to only stay in one city. In Rome, you have culture, city and history combined with delicious food and gelato. Florence is great, a bit more laid back than Rome and from there we took a day trip to Pisa via the train  we almost didn't do it but were really happy we did. We spent 4 days in Florence, from here you can also do a wine tour in Tuscany for a day trip, unfortunately the travel agent went to lunch so we couldn't book the wine tour we wanted. Venice is Venice, be prepared for lots of tourists but go see it and find the glass making shops, I would not stay more than 2 days in Venice or Milan for that matter. Milan is a true city, this is where business happens in Italy (suprisingly much more so than anywhere else in the country), it's not really a vacation spot IMO.

Go to Italy, you won't regret it!

I've been to both Rome and Florence and loved them both, but enjoyed the feeling of Florence more.  In Rome we stayed at a b&b near the Coliseum, which was a great location.  Bring comfortable walking shoes, check out the train for trips, and be tough with the taxi drivers.  One thing I recommend, at least in Florence, is to have your hotel make museum reservations for you at places like the Accademia and the Uffizi.
