My fiancee and I want to go to Italy or Hawaii for our honeymoon in September 2010. Of course, we want to save money, but we have already traveled the Caribbean and we're kind of torn between the two destinations. Which would you do, if given the chance? Thanks.

    Italy - SO romantic!!

Hawaii is something that you can do easily with kids.  Italy, not so much.

No question, hands down, ITALY.  You won't regret it. It's amazing.  Hawaii is pretty but nothing you haven't already seen in the carribean.

I have been lucky enough to travel to both places and here is my advice.

If you like art, architecture, history, and that old world feel more - go to Italy.

If you like natural beauty, hiking, relaxing on the beach and staying low key - go to Hawaii.

I loved both places.  Here are some of the other notable differences for me.  Italy was a bit more crowded and hectic than Hawaii was because the cities were more densely populated.  Rome and Florence were the largest cities I stayed in and the architecture, art and food were wonderful.  I also puttered around the Tuscan countryside and visited many of the smaller towns like Volterra.  Everything had that wonderful old world feel.  I am kind of a foodie and everything I ate in Italy was wonderful.  In Hawaii I stayed on Oahu but took island hop day trips to Big Island to see the Volcanos and to Kawai to hike the Na Pali coast (both of which are highly recommended).  The Waikiki area of Oahu is pretty touristy.  The area around Kawela Bay (Turtle Bay Resort) was my favorite in Oahu - it was more laid back and kind of quaint.  Hawaii was the absolute pinacle of natural beauty.  The weather was amazing (I was there at the end of April).  In terms of food, the sushi was amazing, the Hawaiian specialties were good, and there was some great Pho in Chinatown in Oahu.  So I guess I would say there was more variety of food in Oahu than Italy but I thought overall Italy's food was better.

EDIT: Oh I should probably also add that I got engaged in Hawaii so I might be a little biased :)  On the other hand I have friends who honeymooned there recently and loved it.

I've been to both desitnations and LOVE them both.

If you choose Hawaii, you won't have to worry about exchanging money, not knowing the language or having to keep up with your passport.

For me, Hawaii is more relaxing...I could sit back and enjoy myself. With Italy, I was constantly on the go because there were so many things that I wanted to see (I came back tired!)

I think Hawaii is much more beautiful and exotic than the Caribbean (but it may have been the locations that I have been to were just not that special -- Dominican Republic, Grand Caymans, St. Martin, Cancun and Costa Rica).

Italy has some of the tastiest desserts ever! And the history of the entire country is spectacular.

I might be biased because we are going to Hawaii for our honeymoon, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

We just got back from our honeymoon, which included a good amount of time (close to two weeks) in Italy. It's amazing there and although I agree that you'll come back tired from all there is to do there, I vote Italy. Hawaii is beautiful, but so is Italy - the Amalfi Coast made my jaw drop so many times I thought that it might become permanently unhinged!

I am the biggest fan of Hawaii ever, but for honeymoon, I'd say Italy as well.

I may be a bit partial -- since it's where WE honeymooned -- but I say Italy!  I'll be posting our recaps soon, so you can get an idea what we did in early September.  :)

I say Italy, like others said, you can always do Hawaii later with kids.

Italy Italy Italy!!!! I personally have zero interest in going to Hawaii, such a long flight when you can have the exact same experience in the Virgin Islands! Italy, on the other hand, is an experience everyone should have at least once in their lives...the food is out of this world, it's SOOOOO so so so gorgeous and the towns and cities are amazing...Have fun wherever you end up!

One more vote for Italy!  Just make sure you have a lot of energy for sightseeing and such.  Hawaii is a good honeymoon destination just because you can relax and keep it lowkey if you want to wind down from months of hectic wedding planning.  But I would go to Italy!

I'd say Italy. I'm actually scared to go as I know I'd end up 2 stone heavier from all the lovely food mmmmmmmm.

it really depends on how you want to spend your honeymoon.  Are you guys the adventurous types or laid back.  Like some of the others above, i've been lucky enough to goto both italy and hawaii and love them both for different reasons.

if you want a laid back vacation w/ your new hubby i'd say hawaii.....no matter where you go or how much you see/do, the islands have that laid back, friendly vibe....you can't help but relax!

If you guys are into exploring, and art and architecture and history than italy might be a better choice.

both are beautiful in such different and unique ways...it realy depends what you are into and if this is alone time for you guys to relax or like any other vacation and time to explore.

FI and I are planning on Italy in September 2010 too! I lived in Rome for three months and September is a really good time to go - if a little on the hot side. Late September is what we are looking at. I love Italy. Definitely go there. And I agree with the PP who said you can do Hawaii with kids but not Italy. It's also more romantic than Hawaii, IMO.

I have only been to Hawaii and not Italy but if it was my choice to go to one or the other and had never been to either I would choose Italy. In my opinion, you could go to Hawaii anytime in your life... Italy, not so much. I have heard Italy is just fabulous... Florence, Rome, Venice, Lake Como... ahhh, the endless possibilities! I would go to Italy in a heartbeat! Hawaii... you can go there anytime!
