I'm completely flabbergasted at the footage from the Vancouver riots that broke out last night. It's a game. You lost. Get over it. There is absolutely no reason to set cars on fire and deface public property. I'm not even from Canada but this upsets me. How people can be so fucking stupid is beyond me. I sincerely hope everyone involved pays dearly for the damage they've caused (especially those dumb enough to pose for the camera).
Vancouver bees, what's your stance on this? Did anyone witness it?
ETA: I checked to see if this topic has been started already but didn't see one. Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse.
@UpstateCait: I'm not a Vancouver bee but GOOD GOD I was horrified by this. I would be so mortified if I were from Vancouver, and was "represented" by these fools!! eessshh!!
It makes me absolutely sick to see the images from the riot. Not only the property damage but hearing things about people being injured. They said one police officer had around sixteen stitches because someone hit him with a brick. I just don't even understand why they thought this was logical at all. I also can't imagine what it would have been like to walk out and see your car on fire or walk out and be attacked.
In the UK,a lot of people in any sort of riot are usually out to cause trouble,as in, they had it organised regardless of the outcome. Those people are idiots.
I just feel for the people caught up in it all,it must be pretty scary stuff to be in the middle of it all,
x
I don't understand this behaviour. It's a fucking game, I agree. I mean give me a break. It's not worth hurting other people over, seriously!
@mandb122: Exactly. I mean, I understand having team pride and being bummed that you lost but it takes a whole new breed of idiot to pull off this shit. I couldn't even imagine.
@sorrycharlie: That's what I was thinking. I'd really like to hear from some Vancouver bees to see how they feel abut this.
I'm from Vancouver and I'm not ashamed in the least. A few fools act out and y'all think I'm now embarrassed to call this home. Not a chance. I think the rioting idiots are just that but to say or even suggest that we're represented by them is just silly.
Moreover I'm more embarassed at the idiots who think the Canucks let us down or embarrassed us. Are you kidding? They went all the way to to finals! With all the refs against us, with all the hate from other cities, with all the inguries we encountered you don't think those boys left it all out there? I certainly do! It just wasn't enough this time around. Those boys gave it all they had it just wasn't enough. I'm so proud and I still love this city.
Also, this thread was posted last night. It's actually how I first heard about the riots.

@mandb122- we had a march over here a few months ago which ended up turning into a riot, one of my friends was working in an ambulance which rioters were trying to tip over because they were treating people from an opposing march.he said it was one of the mosy genuinely scary moments of his life an thought he was going to get killed that day!
Why they let two opposing, organised marches happen on the same day is beyond belief!

Ugh, I just want to punch that one girl who did the "oh look how sweet I am" pose in the face!
I'm not from Vancouver, but I am from BC and I'm totally horrified and disgusted with what happened. I'm ashamed and embarrassed too. I just can't believe that people would do something like that. Those poor people who had their property damaged or were injured, all because of a few trouble makers.
I've been in large crowds in Vancouver and Victoria before, and it can be kind of scary. You never know what people are capable of when they're in big groups like that. Mob mentality is a frightening thing.
@kimbo89: No, it doesn't make sense at all to let those happen on the same day. I just don't get acting like that. And actually, I'm really surprised after seeing those videos that no deaths have been reported.
I've lived in Vancouver for a few years but not anymore. I really don't think these riots were a result of the game. Honestly, I think the "Hooligans" as the mayor called them were going to riot like idiots no matter the outcome of the game. I don't know if you watched much of the news coverage of the riots but there is a group of "anarchists" that were in black bandanas organized to hit the Hudson Bay Company and they have looted the store in the past.
What bothered me the most were all the idiots that were eager to tell the news crews how disgusted they were but they stayed out in the streets for a few hours. They needed to go home and let the police focus on the rioters and not have to worry about people being picture or twitter happy to be out in the danger.
@mandb122: Defnitely missed that last night. I didn't even hear about the riots until a few hours ago. Nothing was even mentioned on the radio this morning. Weird.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the riots had nothing to do with Game 7. The people who stayed in the downtown core were the ones who had glorified the '94 riot and wanted to stage their own repeat performance of it whether we won or lost.
The true hockey fans, myself and my friends included, shrugged it off, took it like a man, got the hell out of downtown and went home. The f*cking pillagers starting the fires, breaking into stores, and beating on each other DO NOT reflect Canucks fans and Vancouverites, despite what everyone elsewhere seems to think.
Today there are hundreds of pissed off Vancouver residents cleaning up the streets of downtown to show that they are better than the small percentage of the population who felt like being sh*t disturbers. If I didn't have to work, I would be there with them. The rioters were a f*cking embarrassment to us all and now the world thinks we're all pathetic neanderthals who can't handle losing a game, when what it really was was a small group of people out for blood who would have started the chaos no matter what the outcome of the game.
So now the rest of us who love and value our beautiful city will spend years having to try and "redeem" ourselves because of some lowlife assholes.
@vmec: That's... nice, I guess but this thread was certainly not started to debate whether or not the Canucks suck. Frankly, this chick doesn't give a hoot about either team. What I do care about is the innocent people who were hurt or had their property destroyed because of some selfish pricks who felt the need to make a statement.
@linguo42: I guess it's hard to believe that these weren't Canucks fans when pictures like these were captured...
(They're going to be enormous, sorry, too lazy to resize)

Can't forget this gem...

And this chick who I'd like to punch in the face. You're not cute hunny, you're an idiot.

People died in Boston when the Red Sox broke the curse and won the world series. So people aren't immune whether they are winning or losing!
@UpstateCait: Everyone and (literally) their dog has been wearing a Canucks jersey/shirt around this town for weeks. Most of them are bandwagon jumpers who wouldn't take two minutes to watch a Canucks game if it wasn't the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
THIS is my Vancouver:

I'm kind of glad I moved away from Vancouver this spring. It's a disgusting, embarrasing, idiotic nightmare and everyone I know thinks the same. This wasn't anything to do with team pride, or wanting to celebrate or anything like that. This was the disgusting depravity that exists in society today that lept out of dark corners. Many reports blame alcohol consumption, but deep down it's got to be a few people with very serious problems and no concept of personal responsibility who came out wanting to cause trouble. Vancouver had been broadcasting the games on big screens downtown, creating party zones for the duration of the series without incident, but I heard that many who were downtown last night started sensing something amiss and left before the third period ended. I'm sure that many where down there to have a good time, but it really was just a core of severely rotten apples and then some mob mentality thrown in. Humanity can be capable of such ugliness. :-( It's even more embarrasing that, yes, the same thing happened when we lost the cup in 1994. At this rate, we deserve to be banned from the cup running ever again.
Over the past decade or so, Vancouver had got a reputation as the "no fun" city as there wasn't much in the way of public events. This had been turning around recently with an increase in events, festivals, and the continual street parties during the Olympics. The Olympics was really something else! There were streets packed with people, energy, and fun, and it was essentially without incident. So no doubt the city figured that the dark past was behind them and they could have these Stanley cup game gatherings. And they were proven wrong.
I was watching news coverage last night and they interviewed a few people who were complaining about so called "police brutality" You know what? I think the police probably did a stellar job with the horrendous situation last night. I commend them. As for bystanders, anyone who didn't listen to the repeated requests to leave the downtown can't be now crying that the police were too harsh or that boo-hoo, they got tear gassed. I'll admit, I cheered for the police officer who was beating on a drunken lout who had been taking swings at the officer for several minutes.
So that's where I'm at! Stunned, ashamed, and angry at the moronic louts who were busy destroying so much more than property and safety, but also Vancouver's very reputation.
somone said they wanted to hear from vancouverites and I am such. I decided to express my opinion.
@linguo42: And thats beautiful. Too bad it looked like this last night...

Not a Vancouver Bee, but Canadian. Can't really say much but I'd like to share this photo from downtown Vanouver today.

Gotta appreciate those people who went out and helped clean up.
Who the hell are those two people who were like " SWEET RIOTS Let's fuck!" What?!
Also, I'm so disturbed by the Police cars on fire and the people just breaking windows and hurting others over something so trivial. That photo of the man TRYING to start the police car on fire makes me so angry. It also kind of makes me want to ask WTF the photograher was doing. How about letting that guy know that's probably a bad idea rather then asking him to pose for the photo? Those people should rot in a jail cell for a LONG LONG time.
@kayakblondie: A guy came up to me last night telling me about how he got tear gassed downtown. I was like, "My friends and I got out of downtown as soon as we could after the game." He replies, "Oh, I didn't watch the game downtown, I watched it at home. I went downtown afterwards to see what was happening." Yeah, you deserved to be tear-gassed then, jerk.
@MsBrooklynA: Apparently she was seriously injured and he was trying to keep pressure on one of her wounds until help arrived.
@linguo42: It's like running into a burning building just to feel the heat. If this is what the human race is coming to, we're all fucked.
@linguo42: I'm not from Vancouver but my friends who are say the same thing. They all went out for the game and left early because they felt something coming. They are hardcore hockey fans and none of them would ever do something so horrible like this. I think true fans have enough respect for themselves, the game, their team, and their COUNTRY to behave like idiots. My friends also seconded the notion that it was a bunch of people who wanted to repeat the '94 riots who came out to act a fool... and may have done so no matter who won or lost.
Here are some photos of the people that make me proud of Vancouver. http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Photos+Vancouver+wakes+riot+aftermath+pitches+clean/4957745/story.html
@linguo42: Really?! Obviously I wasn't there but unless the wound was in her mouth, I guess I just don't see it. Could just be a bad angle but from the looks of this picture, they're totally making out.

Didn't LA do this....when they won something? NBA championship or something like that? A while ago, I think.
Crazy, crazy behavior...
@linguo42: Oh my. Yup, definitely had that coming to him!
In 94 they were able to identify and prosecute a lot of those involved using surveillance video, etc. Now with cameras everywhere I was surprized to see how few people actually made an attempt to hide their faces. There is a Facebook page where people are posting their pictures and asking others to name the offenders. It may not be the very best approach, but I'm sure that many will be identified and prosecuted.
@kayakblondie: I hope every last one of them pays for what they did.
How is this okay?!
@UpstateCait: Yeah I thought the same thing when I saw that picture, but I guess he's just trying to keep her calm. If I thought my SO might die I'd probably be kissing them too.
There are a small chunk of the photos online that involve people trying to stand up against the rioters too, but they all look the same when it's a still frame. I'd be mother-effing afraid to get between someone and the plate glass window they were about to smash, but there were some who tried to curb the destruction. I can't find the video now, but there was one on YouTube that showed several of these people.
I'm a former Vancouverite, and while I'm embarrassed at what some people did, I'm proud of my Canucks (and I'm not a bandwagon jumper, I've been a fan since I was a kid) for making it as far as they did. Apparently a lot of people went downtown specifically to riot, and probably blamed losing as a way to justify it. I obviously don't agree with what the rioters did and I'm embarrassed that this is making headlines worldwide. I promise, we're not all like that!!!
I haven't heard from any of my friends or family in Vancouver, nobody has even posted anything on Facebook, but I can guarantee that they're not impressed either.
