I don't have a suggestion but I'm looking for suggestions too! We just moved from Columbia where in the winter it averages 55 degrees up here to Minnesota where it's not even close to that. We were going to go to a North Face outlet soon to check it out but I'd love to hear suggestions people have on here!
I bought a wool military-style trench at Target a couple of years ago and it is SO warm. They have great coats that are really cute and really warm. I also have a tweed coat (from Target, again) that's so warm, I can wear it in the dead of winter in Iowa and be toasty.
Down-filled all the way! Fur is the warmest, but down-filled coat is next best.
@abbyful: Agreed! Down filled coat will be the best warmth to weight ratio hands down.
I have this feather light (pun not intended) north face 800 fill power down coat... it feels paper thin, non bulky enough that I can squish it into just about any hand bag I have, and weights nothing, but its warm enough for 10 degree Boston winters days. I will only wear down coats in the winter.
Something like this maybe?

If you want casual -go with the columbia that a pp suggested. The are light weight and the warmest coat I have ever had. For a dressier coat - I bought a Tahari coat last year that is so freaking warm, looks amazing, and is so soft. It is the only thing I am looking forward to about winter is wearing that coat. Bonus that it came with the cutest matching hat.
Both Calvin Klein and Donna Karen make amazing wool coats with gorgeous collars and details in several lengths. I have short and long in both depending on the weather.
I would check out Macy's and see what they have, they will be having their sale soon (early Fall) for jackets.
J.Crew's thinsulate lined wool coats are WARM!!! They are also totally cute! I also have a couple of their wool coats without the lining, and I keep warm in them also.
I would also recommend looking at overstock.com - they have lots of nice winter coats at a great price. I found a purple wool Anne Klein coat there last year for less than half the price it was at Macy's. It's nice to find a good deal - then you can get a warm down one and a cute wool one :)
If you want a heavy coat I would suggest Northface. My Northface coat is my go to when it is freezing out!
i love my down coat from lands end! keeps me warm in chicago! they carry petite and are way cheaper than north face

I bought this coat for winter last year. It was really warm and cozy.
I bought this coat last year and it is super warm. I love the stand-up collar to keep the wind out. Also, I like that it is a little bit longer and keep my butt and thighs warm on my cold cars seats. :) (ETA: I got it at TJ Maxx for $80 instead of Macy's for $200+)
I have the North Face Andie down parka, I love it! It's a cross between the Metropolis and the Triple C, I don't think they make it anymore though. It's super warm and I definitely recommend a down jacket (:

it feels like summer is already over! :( i get cold very, very easily - do any of you ladies have suggestions to very warm (and hopefully stylish as well) winter jackets?
i have bought about one per year for the last five years, and not one has seemed to keep me warm. i always end up wearing two sweatshirts under the jacket and stuffing myself in to try and keep warm! i am also very petite (4'11), so any jackets that come in smaller sizes would be great!
(i cant post to the lounge from my work computer for some reason..)
