I know how you feel. I hate hate hate renting and I want to get a new house! But practically, we can't until we sell our other house and get my interitance from my grandmother in 2 years. So I have to wait.
@missasb - On the plus side, at least you have a goal time in mind. It sucks waiting, though. We aren't even going to try and sell our house if we were to move right now - we'd try and find renters through a local company that has a great track record w/ homes like ours. This market!! We bought high.
The best site that I used was realtor.com It is the official site of realtors and links directly to the MLS. Sometimes realtors will only load 4 or so pictures to the MLS but have more on their site. I also liked it because it tells you what realtor each house is listed in and you can call them directly. It also has a lot of search features (we wanted something over 1/2 an acre so we could have privacy) and has a great map tool.
I didn't think going from the cost of my expensive apartment to a house would be that bad. I was paying $750 for like 750 sq ft and now I pay about $1,100 for 2,200 sq ft. I love my house but in addition to the monthly expense of the mortgage, there seems to be SOO many other costs. Sometimes I miss the feeling that we could up and move if we had to, or we could go on vacation without worrying about our AC breaking etc.
@Melissa: I know! Our home is rented right now. Part of me hates that too. Every day it feels further and further away from owning a home.
I have House Update fever. I painted the hallway today and there is SOOOO much i want to do. Today. Now. This. Very. Moment.
I know what you are going through! Back when we were dating we lived in apartment for over 2 yrs. It was fine for us and we always talked about if we would buy or build but we were getting so crammped and neighbors were always an issue! I was always worried about the money aspect and honestly never thought I could own my own home, weird I know, but no one else in my family did and at the time had a large amount of student loan debt. We talked really heavy about a month before we got engaged to which I had no idea was even coming. The weekend we got engaged we actually had an appointment with the builder that finally did our home to only "look" but the fever hit bad then bc I fell in love with a home and then wouldn't you know, when we got home, there were 5 police cars and swat in our parking lot doing a drug bust? Yep we signed the contract 3 days later!
Glad to know i'm not alone!
@missgreen - wow - that would make me sign the papers, too!
@ejs - Girl I had that home update bug this winter and I found myself perched treacherously on the washer and dryer, PAINTING THE LAUNDRY ROOM (aka the cat's litter box room). That was just the tip of the iceberg of random things I did that month.
@caszos - thanks for the tips!
We had the fever and we bought a house last year :)
I love our house, but I worry about the future. I have realized that we may consider moving out of our current city in the future. I hope we can sell our place if that times comes. I really do love having our own home and backyard though :)

NOT baby fever - HOUSE fever. It's out of control! We own a townhouse in a great part of town, but feel like we are outgrowing it. This isn't news, but somehow out of left field, my husband and I have been hit with the fever. We want more privacy, space, and our own pool. We want to entertain and be able to relax without neighbors so close in townhomes, or little kids splashing my ipod or getting pool water in my beverage while I'm relaxing.
We just can't move forward with any plans until we are 100% sure we want to stick around, so practicality gets in the way of my fever. We aren't planning on having kids for a while, and while we might get a dog, it's not like we NEED to move. Yet the idea remains, and I can't stop looking at real estate websites! Anyone else have this issue?
