I have the Sophia dress in the chiffon and I love it. Its my go-to LBD. Fits great. I would sign up for or keep an eye out for the J. Crew emails. They regularly send free shipping emails so you can try the dress without paying for shipping. If you have a store nearby, you can return them to the store directly. I bought J. Crew dresses for my wedding and ended up getting them on eBay. They were all $225+ dresses and I ended up paying $100 including shipping for each. One of the eBay stores I used offered a 10% discount if I purchased multiple dresses using the buy it now, plus free shipping beyond the first dress. I'd be happy to share some coupon codes with you, just send me a PM or email me at flutterbyxo at yahoo dot com
Good Luck!
My friend did this for her wedding, if you give me your email I can try emailing you a few of the pics directly from the link on her photography site.. I obviously can't DL them, and I don't have pictures of all of us standing together on my camera.. Send me a PM if you want me to try to send them to you! PS It was a great idea, everyone was happy with their dresses and can definitely wear them again. Only thing I would say is that it doesn't make the wedding party stand out as much, I've been to two weddings that used black JCrew dresses (one that I was in and one that I was a guest at) and I noticed that the wedding party was difficult to distinguish in the one I wasn't in.
my maids are wearing j crew bridesmaid dresses. i picked the color and material (light flamingo silk taffeta) and let them pick the style. they all ended up picking the same one...delores.
my girls are thrilled with their dresses. and the great part about ordering from j crew is that the dresses arrived within days of ordering them. they will have plenty of time to get a different size if it doesn't fit - and you can return them at j crew stores. in my case, all of the dresses fit the girls perfectly.
if you decide on j crew, the dresses fit true to j crew sizes - so it it is really not too difficult to figure out what size to order.
you should order some swatches on line - mine got to me in a couple of days. the material is really beautiful, and the dresses look even better in person.
i was short on time, so j crew made a ton of sense - but honestly after seeing the dresses and hearing how happy my maids are with the choice, i'd go with j crew even if i wasn't time crunched.
now if i had the money and the time - i might go with alix and kelly. i love their dresses.
my bridesmaids ended up picking the sophia dress. they ordered them a couple weeks ago, so hopefully the dresses will be in soon. i've only heard good things about j.crew dresses, so i'm not worried. maybe i can give an update about what the girls think once the dresses have arrived.
Thanks everyone! I feel much better about the dresses now. My bridesmaids and i don't live in the same city so it's really difficult to meet up and try on dresses. Plus, we're all on a budget and since I'm asking them to buy their dresses, I wanted something they would actually wear again!
my maids are also doing the j crew tricotine dress. they all have a little bit different body type, and it looks great on all of them. i had the girls buy them while they were on sale so we got them for $100. Most girls bought two sizes since they couldn't try it on at the store & just returned the one that didn't fit. J Crew often also has free shipping when you buy over $150.
My bridesmaids are wearing JCrew dresses -- I picked the Sophia in bright green -- and they are really happy with the style and price.
I went to the store and told them that I wanted a few sample dresses for my friends to try on, and they were happy to do that, free of charge. They ordered a few sizes and then people could just go to the store and figure out what size they wanted. It was also nice for me because I got to see the color in person -- it ended up being prettier in real life than in the catalog or the color swatches.
Also, if you are a student, you get a 15% discount, so you and your bridesmaids should keep that in mind. I ended up buying all the dresses so we could get the discount, and then the bridesmaids just reimbursed me later.
I got the Juliet dress in Espresso for all my bridesmaids. The dresses are gorgeous and simple and all the girls loved them and are excited to *truly* be able to wear them again. I think the chiffon material makes it definitely less "bridesmaidy" so you really can wear them again. Anything in taffeta or satin and I think it's pretty obvious it was a bridesmaid dress. Just my 2 cents :)
Just one point, I have a terrible time fitting JCrew dresses...even XS petites. I swear they are all designed and cut for giants, and I'm always swimming in them and the neckline is down to my navel. Just something to keep in mind if you have short BMs (like maybe ask them first, they probably already know if they would have this issue).
I wore the Sophia long silk tricotine dress as my wedding gown, and it was wonderful! Absolutely the most comfortable dress. I liked that I could wear a normal bra...although with the tricotine it was necessary to get seamless underwear. Their shipping is fast, and you can return, no hassles, to the stores. You or your maids can also order from their red conceirge phone in any store to get free shipping, something that not everyone knows about. I am 5'8" and a size 10, and the proportions were just right. I agree that they can be harder to fit for plus or petite sizes, but alterations are possible. PM if you want to see any photos.
I wore the Cotton Cady Lyndsey dress in black the last time I was a bridesmaid. I ordered a petite size and it fit very well. I loved that dress and can't wait to wear it again. Very comfortable, and the little bra strap hooks on the shoulders were great. But I had to buy a special bra for it, because the V in the back is so low. I think I was the only one with a J. Crew dress...not sure where the other girls bought theirs.
My girls are wearing silk taffetta dresses in Medditerranean Blue (there are three different styles). I don't have pics yet, but they're super cute! The downside is, they were pricey..but I'm hopig the girls will get another use out of them. They're pretty versitle, I think.
Beware!!! My wedding is a month away and we discovered that although my bridesmaids all ordered the same color dress, the apparently came from different dye lots and are no where close to the same color! What a disaster. Even bridesmaids who ordered the same dress in the same color on the same day ended up with different color dresses.
The color you see online may not be the actual color of the dress in person--just an FYI.
We decided to keep ours and just make them work, as the look and the price ($100 on sale) was right.
If you're worried about color, you can request swatches online or on the phone for free.
My girls all wore the silk chiffon sophia and everyone except for the 7-months pregnant bridesmaid has worn them again already.
My girls are wearing this dress...and are totally LOVING me for it! ;) They all adore the dress!
I am pretty sure I am going to go with J. Crew dresses for my bridesmaids. Nine days out of ten I am wearing head-to-toe J. Crew anyway -- I have a ton of their dresses myself so I know my BMs will get a lot of use out of them in the future. I know that at the larger stores (definitely here in Boston) they'll call in samples of the dresses so you can see them in person. For sure call their bridal consultant and get color swatches at the very least.
Beware!!!! Don't order the silk chiffon!
My bridesmaid dresses all arrived in different shades of the same color! We have gone around in circles for months with Jcrew trying to get it fixed and they still keep shipping them dresses in different shades! It's not even subtle! The wedding staff at JCrew has been rude and horribly unhelpful. I am truly disgusted that they can't seem to get this right!

Hey...I have been considering the bridesmaids dresses(specifically the Sophia in tricotine or chiffon) on the JCrew wedding website, but I know that they don't have any of them in stores to try on. Has anyone ever used their dresses, and if so, what did you think of them? I'd be even more grateful if you include pics! Thanks!
