I really love the style of J Crew's Sophia dress, and am crazy about the Mediterranean Blue color that they come in, but my mom is convinced the Silk Tricotine will stain instantly (like even from water) and not really be wearable.

I ordered a swatch of the fabric and put a small water drop on it to test, and the fabric really did stain -- it's still there 2 weeks later!

For the girls whose bridesmaids have worn these dresses, how'd it go?  Should we get them anyway, or do you wish you'd gone with a more forgiving fabric?

I don't know anything about silk tricotine, but they also have the Sophia dress in silk chiffon in vintage blue. It's similar to the other color. Maybe that would work?

Thanks for your suggestion, Merlot.  The vintage blue chiffon is actually teal in real life (just sent back the dress I ordered).

interesting question! i actually bought a j crew "rebecca" --- which i resold cause it didn't fit me at all, at all,  at all -- but i have to say i LOVED the fabric, which was silk tricotine, specifically. i am a big critic of the quality of some j crew stuff (the knits/cashmere, in particular, are often lovely/cool-looking but fall apart or pill after one wear.) BUT: the j crew silk tricotine was really really nice. it has a good weight and swing to it ... like, swish-y and mid-weight. MUCH nicer fabric than so many wedding dresses i saw in my search. all that said, a silk tricotine, in general, in a pale color would probably stain easily, i imagine, yes. (a white or ivory might be fine? a dark might be fine? but i can imagine it your pale blue staining easily.) this would probably also be true of many genuine silks: silk-satin, silk-crepe, etc.

My bridesmaids wore the Sophia dress in silk tricotiene, and I thought it was a great dress (didn't hurt that we got them on mega-sale!) -- very flattering on my bridesmaids.  I didn't really think about water-staining, and I can see why that would be a concern if you're getting married in a rain-heavy season, but it rained on our wedding day and I haven't noticed any stains yet in our photographs!  I'd say go for it, but obviously I'm biased ;-)

Wore a JCrew long silk tricotine dressin ivory on my wedding day, which was rainy, and didn't have any problems with staining at all.  Which was kind of amazing, especially around the hem, considering how much we were outside and tromping around on city sidewalks and in the dirt.  But didn't have any large quantities of water/rain dumped on the dress either....thank goodness ;)

    Hi there,

I am also interested in the J Crew Med. Blue sik tricotine and am having the same worries as Amy. Melissa- could you tell us which color you used?  Thanks!

One of my BM wore this dress and I don't remember there being any issues.  A couple of them wore the silk tricotine fabric and didn't have any problems with stains or anything.  Although, they wore the dresses in black, so maybe it wouldn't be as noticable there?

Thanks Jessie! I think with Navy, black, white, water stains would be less of an issue. I am curious to hear from people who have had the lighter color dresses? Thanks in advance!

@amyboston: I just ordered them today... oh, how I wish I had read this first!  Are they really teal?  Not even close to a blue lighter than navy blue like I thought!?!?
