I’ve had this weird tension in my jaw for the past few weeks. I know I’m clenching my jaw a lot, but I’m not sure why because I’m not stressed at all. In fact, this is the least stressful time I’ve had in years! It’s so weird.
I’ve been massaging my jaw area and that’s helped, but the muscles still feel achy and tired. I don’t think I’m grinding my teeth or anything. I usually go to sleep before Darling Husband and he said he hasn’t heard anything, plus my teeth feel normal and fine — it’s just my jaw.
Anyone else ever dealt with this weird tension feeling? It’s not even that painful, just annoying. Anyone have any home remedy suggestions besides massage? Heat?

I know that in your own mind you don’t feel stressed, but sometimes when you don’t feel stressed as in “argh” it can come out in other ways. My skin gets really bad and I also clench my teeth. We all get strange symptoms of stress. Try not to worry too much about it, but some relaxation exercises might help. I find that yoga is really helpful.

I would consider going to a doctor if it doesn’t go away soon. I could be TMJ and they might have to give you a mouthguard or something to keep yourself from clenching. You could be clenching your jaw even if you aren’t grinding your teeth.

I was also going to say it could be TMJ. Definitely talk to your doc who will refer to you a specialist. I clench my teeth and grind them at night so I have to wear a splint, but when I was about 7 my jaw locked for almost a month. I was due for surgery when it magically unlocked and it’s never happened since. You definitely don’t want that to happen though I couldn’t chew and even opening my mouth to yawn was incredibly painful and I had to suppress them.

definitely sounds like TMJ.. i had an awful pain on my left side of my jaw and i thought it was my wisdom teeth but it turned out i was clenching my jaw in my sleep. my dentist made me a night guard and it’s been great ever since. sometimes i forget to put it on when i go to sleep but even so i don’t have any more pain! good luck!

I’ll second (third, fourth?) the TMJ suggestion.
I don’t grind my teeth, but I clench them (at night and when I’m angry). I went for a massage the other day and the lady said that when you chew, all the anger from the day is coming out in that, which is another reason you may have too much pressure in your jaw. I thought that was interesting.
I know some people have had good luck with drug-store mouth guards, but I tried mine when my dentist-made guard was broken and it didn’t help. But…I was able to return mine so if that’s the case, it can’t hurt…

Oh boy… crap. I was hoping no one would say TMJ!! 🙂
My dad has jaw issues, so I guess it runs in the family, so I probably will make a trip to the dr if it doesn’t go away soon. It’s very annoying more than anything…
Thanks for the suggestions ladies!
