I'd suggest either going to the Blue Note down in the West Village or to Cleopatra's Needle. Blue Note is more pricey with a cover and drink minimum, but in my opinion it's one of the most famous jazz clubs in the country. I like Cleopatra's Needle (93rd and Broadway) because you never know what you're going to see there.
