We are getting ready to start building a home. In one of the homes we saw, I fell in love with a jet tub the master bathroom had. I am totally a bath person, but haven't been able to enjoy a nice long bath for a long time since I have been living in apts since college. I don't take baths in apartments. I am weird about germs, ha...
Anyway, we are thinking about adding a jet tub into the floor plans our builder is drawing for us....which is going to be about $3500...give or take a bit. I know I want a jet tub, but I'm afraid that maybe I won't use it as much as I think, and maybe we can use the $3500 towards something/other things in the house? Nicer shower, granite in bathrooms (instead of just the kitchen), etc...what would you do? I know we'll all have differing opinions on what is important in a house, but just curious to see some opinions here. Thanks!
$3500?! That's outrageous! Is there anyway you can have them set everything up for the tub you want, but not actually install it? We bought our jetted tub at Home Depot during a sale for about $800, and it only took my husband a couple hours to install by himself. It's definitely worth it, but I don't know if it's worth $3500, when you can get one so much cheaper through another venue.
I have 2 jet tubs and I don't use them very much. But When I do have a bath I LOVE having them. It is so relaxing and just plain wonderful. I don't know if it is worth the $3500 tho...
They are also a great selling feature, if you ever plan to move again.
I think the $3500 might be for a pretty nice one, so I will definitely find out how much one is w/o all the bells & whistles. I think part of that price is the extra plumbing, the tile work around it, etc... I will have to look into the price of tubs etc to see where they are getting the $3500 from exactly.
Jet tub is on our must have list when we buy a new home. It was the best part of our honeymoon and what made hubby decide we really should start planning to sell his house and buy OUR house.
I just looked up prices on corner tubs and they seem to be 2k+ so maybe that is about right?
I'm a very practical person but I LOVE baths so I'd go for it if it was up to me. Personally, I'd rather spend the money on something that I'd use like a jet tub than a countertop.
I love baths, but because I'm tall, I usually never take one because I hate the fact that I can't fit in the water all at the same timein a standard tub. A jet tub would definitely be a must for me!!
@cherrycoke: That might be a part of the price. Ours isn't a corner, jetted tub, so it was definitely cheaper than what you'll be getting. $3500 is still a little steep, but it would be worth it for me; I use mine every single night. :)
@SuperKate: I'd rather spend the money on something that I'd use like a jet tub than a countertop. Exactly this! Granite countertops aren't relaxing and enjoyable like a nice bath. :)
Thanks ladies! I just keep telling myself if we don't get one, I'll probably be sad whenever I go to take a bath & it's not very comfy.. PLUS, like @PennyLainne: said, it will help when/if we sell! :)
I voted "jet tub".
I also want to note that you should get a bubble style tub, not a whirlpool. The bubble style just has air go through it, the whirlpool has your both water circulating through it. Whirlpool style is harder to clean and the tubes get nasty.
I don't have jets, but have a large deep soaker tub, and love it. Might be a compromise where you still get an upgrade, but shouldn't cost anywhere near as much, so you'd still have money left over for other things.
In the room I'm renting now, I have a jet soaker tub, although not a corner model, and I love it. Before moving in where I am now, it had been YEARS since I took a bath. I've still only had about 4 since October, but when I plan time to actually take a bath, it's lovely.
Sometimes I'll even add bubble bath, and the jets make it super bubbly. And I feel like I'm in a movie.
@abbyful: Thanks for the input! I will remember that & mention it to our realtor/builder :)
$3500 is way to much for me to be able to justify spending on a tub, but I'm really not a bath person. I'd rather put the money towards the nice shower and granite instead.
@chancehere: I did this once, my first jaccuzzi tub expreience, in a hotel. I poured inthe bubbles, went to the washroom, came out and holy crap, I had suds almost to the ceiling (not lying, they were towering over 6 feet high lol). Had to bucket them into the shower to get rid of em. It was hilarious, thank god I was alone so no one can hold the story over me! I was in college and needed a retreat from my roommates so booked myself a hotel for a weekend. Got a little more than I bargained for!
@abbyful: That has always made me wonder using them in hotels and B&B's...gross, I sure hope the disincect them, we have a jaccuzzi for our wedding night...now I'm icked out using it lol!
@Mrs. Spring: I agree.
We didn't build, but it came with our home. It is worth it. I don't use it all the time anymore (it really came in handy when I first began going to the gym), but I do soak in it. It is large enough for both of us to sit in it and we are tall (plus I'm 9 months pregnant).
I have a jet tub and I have used it... never. I want to get rid of it and turn the space into a dressing area or closet. I'd definitely use the money elsewhere.
I voted jet tub!!!! But I think you could get a better price than that... I do think it's better than getting special tiles or granite. Granite you look at, jet tubs you relax in! Plus you can always uprade counters later, but you'll never install a new tub later.
If you have a thing about germs, you may want to reconsider a jetted tub. Bacteria can linger and mold can grow in areas of the jet system that do not fully dry, leading to a lovely petri dish of fun. There is a manufacturer who has a blown air cycle that is activated after each use of the tub. The air cycle fully dries the jet system to prevent the bacteria/mold issue. But my understanding is that those tubs are quite expensive, which would require an even larger investment than you are currently contemplating.
Sorry- I would do countertops, or some other upgrade. The germs creep me out, and I'm not that much of a germaphobe.
Ok, now you guys have me thinking about the jetted tub.....and the GERMS!! Ahhh! LOL. What kind of tub can I get that's just normal but can fit 2 people and isn't tiny?
@abbyful: Do you know any brands for something like this bubble style tub? I want to look it up. Thx!
I've seen issues with the jet tubs. Personally, I would rather just have a large non-jet tub where I can add whatever to the water without worrying what it will to do the jets.
I have a hot tub in my house and we almost never use it. I mean, I'd rather go for a big soaking tub than one with jets. You can't use bubble baths in a jet tub. :(
I'm a bath person. Go for it!
But don't spend that much. We're planning on buying one and FI will install it himself.
I am thinking we will just go with a big soaking tub now that it sounds like there can be issues with the jets etc....plus the reason why I wanted one is just to sit & relax in anyway. The jets would be nice, but not needed I suppose.
Realtor opinion: Skip the jet tub. Get a garden tub so you still have the large bath with separate shower and upgrade elsewhere.
@SFreeman2187: Yay! Thanks. I'm glad I asked this question. :) Are garden tubs a lot less pricey? What's a good brand to get? Garden tubs have NO jets, correct?
@cherrycoke: A garden tub is going to cost more than a stardar tub but significantly less than jetted. It will depend mostly of shape and size. You can get pretty crazy with these, really - ask my mom. She has the longest tub I have EVER seen. Your style tub will also vary depending on the type of install you want so you should honestly talk with your builder.
im totally a bath person and my thoughts are when it comes to building a bathroom - get it right the first time because you are not going to renovate that room for at least 10-15yrs - so ask yourself, do you want to spend the next 10yrs wishing you had put that bath in???
we had a vacation over christmas and one of the hotels had a double jet spa bath - yeah, i was swimming in that thing every night and i havent shut up about it to hubby yet. im going to have to wait at least 5yrs until i get a chance to have on installed :(
Didn't read all the replies, but I have a story... My sis and her DH got a garden jetted tub in their house and the hot water heater wasn't big enough to fill it up. So they didn't use it... At all
@anotherbee: Another good point. I will ask our builder/realtor about this as well!
$3500 seems like a lot for a tub. Our deluxe bath option through our builder was around $3500 and that included a corner garden tub, an extra sink, and two windows. I do love our bath tub and it fits both DH and I but for that much for just a tub I think that I would spend the money else where unless....is there any way that you could get a garden tub and not a jetted tub? DH looked it up and he said that our garden tub can be retro fitted with a kit to make it a jetted tub so you could look into that option as well.
I NEED a jet tub... but I'd probably pick granite in bathrooms over it. In terms of house value, granite is a necessity.
@JustMarriedinDC: I think we have decided to get granite everywhere, so I shouldn't have inclued that in the "other".
