My family is going to a Bar Mitzvah on Halloween weekend, so they are having people dress up for the party. Does anyone have any good ideas for Jewish costumes?

My mom is dressing up like a bubbe (I think she's craving grandchildren!).

Did they specify that it has to be a Jewish costume?

You can be Rachel from Glee. Or the Hannukah Armadillo from Friends.

@sloth: I'm laughing my butt off at your suggestions. I love all of them.

I totally vote for the Coffee Talk ladies.

    Everyone has such fun ideas!

@Ms. Meowerson: We're from Fl but the bar mitzvah is in Ohio so that would be such a cute costume to represent our state!

@sloth: It doesn't HAVE to be a Jewish costume, but they suggested Jewish costumes and I think it would be fun b/c the crowd there will actually understand them. The Chanukah Armadillo would be so funny! But I think I'm too cheap to rent an armadillo costume.

MY DH went as an orthadox rabbi to a halloween party one year, and everyone thought he was Amish.

Guess you have to be around the right crowd for them to "get it"

You bring a violin, and dress someone else (strong!) up in a cardboard contraption that looks like the top of a house.

Jump on his shoulders, and voila! Fiddler on the roof!

Or, you could make a roof-shaped skirt out of cardboard, and carry the fiddle around. :)

I have Fiddler on the brain because iTunes was on random and played 'If I Were A Rich Man' earlier today. :)

Haha, I love the Linda Richmond idea. And like LindsayB said, it can be a group costume if you do all of the coffee talk ladies.

My blond bearded brother once went to a Halloween party dressed as Jesus...

The right crowd is key. He was in grad school in England, so no one was horrified when he came in carrying a 6 foot cross.

P.S. I LOVE the idea of a Bar Mitzvah costume party. It's so fun and creative. I bet it's going to be a blast!

@popover: My brother is going as Jesus. He has long hair and people always say he looks like Jesus anyway.

@CanAmBride: I agree, it's a really fun idea! Everyone was kind of upset that they couldn't do Halloween b/c they won't be home, but now they can, and it'll be even better b/c it's with the whole family.

You could be a seder plate, or a hamentaschen or a mohel!

I love these ideas! And what a neat idea for a Bar Mitzvah!! I just wanted to say though, that be careful that taking the "Jewish" costume doesn’t go too far and offend anyone. I know this is where I should put an example of something not to go as, but honestly I just had a HUGE cup of coffee and my caffeinated brain cannot think of an example not OK costume (I am so helpful I know!).

@popover I LOVE your suggestions!! I may borrow some of those ideas for Purim!

I am not really that creative (as in, I would have no idea how to make the actual costume) but what about dressing up as a: Torah, bagel&lox, shofar.

Another idea, go as an actor/actress who either is (or likes to think they are) Jewish: Adam Sandler, Madonna, The Fonz... basically anyone from Adam Sandler's Hanukkah song. Oh, or Barbara!!!

Hi girls, I'm sure its too late, but here's my 2 cents - last year my fiancee and I went as Golda Meir and Moshe Dayan. And we put an IDF t-shirt on our dog! SO CUTE!

Of course we do! Well, maybe not those of us who are Orthodox, but 99% of all Jews I know celebrate Halloween in one way or another!
