I used to love a good, long run in the dark. There’s something very calming about being out there alone, listening to the rhythm of my breath and the cadence of my feet. I found it very centering.
Well, BabyDane woke up around 4am this morning, and at 5am she was still WIDE awake so I thought- what the hell, let’s go for a run! <*By “run” I mean “slow, cumbersome jog”>
I got my old reflective vest out, my headlamp, put an extra reflective vest on the front of my fancy-schmancy jog stroller. I even attached a flashlight to the front tray of the stroller. We were lit up like a non-denominational holiday bush 🙂
Let me tell you, jogging in the dark is wonderful. Jogging in the dark with a baby is TERRIFYING. I was afraid of a car flying around the corner and somehow not seeing us and running us over. I just knew I would fall into an open manhole and the baby would careen down a hill and crash in a fiery blaze. Every set of reflective eyes I saw was like looking into the window of the soul of a mutant creature spat out of the pits of hell to eat my baby. I know, I know, it is a dramatic way to view a stray cat.
Harumphf. Poor babe has no idea how crazy I am. She fell asleep 1/4 mile from home and slept peacefully the entire time. She had not one single little care in the world. I, on the other hand, replayed 1000 horrible deaths until the sun came up to reveal nothing more than my friendly, comfortable, quiet little neighborhood.

Ahh, I think you’re mistaking the crazy for good parenting! It’s normal to worry about your kids, and running in the dark is dangerous regardless if it’s just you, or you and BabyDane!
I do know what you mean about the awesome night/early morning run before the sun comes up. I used to do it all the time. It’s definitely very different than the after work runs I try to get in now.

@abbie017: Hahaha, yeah it’s been tough to get those runs in after work between the heat and timing around baby’s naps & feedings. I might do those early morning runs on my own from now on!

Aww! I can’t even remember the last time I ran in the dark, maybe early this summer when it was still dark at 5:30am? I love it too but can imagine I’d be worried sick if I had a baby with me!

@DaneLady: Awww! I’m so scared to run in the dark by myself, I guess I watch too many Forensic File shows. I know I’d be terrified of doing it with a baby.

Ahh! You poor thing. I’m glad BabyDane was at least oblivious to the terror you were feeling. 😉

I can’t run in the dark.. I actually used to time my runs so I’d get home RIGHT before dark LOL
its scary alone, I can only imagine with a baby!

@DaneLady: You just saved me some serious terror!
I do a lot of 4am running, so lots of running in the dark. Your post had me imagining my run with my precious, perfect baby in tow… Terrifying!

Ok maybe i’m more selfish but I’d be totally scared of a serial killer of some sorts coming out to get me, or following me home!
I guess that’s what living in New York does to you! I wish I could jog when it’s dark!
