The issue with regular J&J baby shampoo is that two specific chemicals thought to cause cancer are found in trace amounts.  The chemicals are only in US version of the regular baby shampoo, not their other products.

Normally, we use Aveeno baby prodcuts (which is actually made by J&J), but we used one bottle of J&J Naturals that was gifted to us, and it was fine.  The J&J Naturals soap left DD’s skin a little dry, so we switched back to Aveeno, but otherwise it was fine.  My suggestion would be to try out a couple different brands, and see what works best for you and your baby.  Most big name companies give out free samples (check their website) of their products to new/expecting parents.

I recently switched to Johnson’s Natural (was using Burts Bees and California Baby); DS has REALLY sensitive skin, and so I was using the natural products more because they were less irritating.  So far, the Johnson’s has been great and he’s had no problems.  Not sure if it’s better from an eco standpoint, but it’s suiting my needs and is much better than the $$$ price tag I was paying.  Only down side is it comes out really fast (more watery?), so you use more.  My bottle of California Baby shampoo would last me a year, and I can already tell the Johnson’s will only last a few months.
