We each have retirement accounts in our individual names, but we still call it “our” retirement.

I use mint.com so I can see all of our accounts/incomes/expenses in one place without having to memorize every password.  So with that, we don’t share passwords.

Mint also allows me to see what he buys on his CC so that I can track our daily expenses in my spreadsheet.  If you ask about gifts and keeping it a surprise, well we don’t really do gifts.  And if he did, he could say, “Hey don’t look at the account for a while.”  Or he could pull cash from the ATM, but really it’s not an issue we deal with.

@AB Bride:  we just have each other’s passwords for everything. My SO likes to keep all her money in 1 or 2 banks so it’s not a ton of passwords to remember for her (yet…soon hopefully we’ll have a 401k to follow)

Before we were married and combined accounts we just made a joint budget and figured it all as our money and our expenses just separated into 2 accounts… Pay these bills out of this account and these out of that account. It was a pain but it worked until we got married and got it all under one account. We have mint so i had his mint pw to see what he paid and how much was in the account but i couldn’t actually spend the money.

we just periodically check in with each other on the status of the other’s accounts that we don’t technically share.

We are able to view each others balances (it’s as though we’ve “shared” our accounts with each other in the eyes of our credit union) for our individual checking and savings accounts. We also frequently share/ask each other for money. We basically treat our individual accounts as joint accounts even though they’re technically not.
