- Wedding: June 2012
YOU GUYS. I’m so excited. What was at first stressful is now so exciting. My fiance and I got engaged about a week ago, but we’ve known for a couple months that we were going to get married in the spring/early summer, so now that it’s official, my mom and I are laying some initial plans.
It was stressful at first because Nick and I are not people that particularly like attention or big, extravagent weddings and wanted to keep it very small, but we both also come from particularly large families who would be devastated if not included in some way. But, I think we’ve found a really good compromise.
JUNE 16 is almost certainly the day; we just need to check with a few important guests.
We’re going for an extremely small ceremony in the late afternoon (30 guests) and a larger (150-200 guest) open-house style reception in the evening. Colors are navy blue and pale pink.
My parents live on a beautiful little lake in central Minnesota, where I’m from, so the ceremony will be in the backyard overlooking the lake. A close family friend, the local county attorney (which is like the DA in other states) will officiate. A similar close family friend might play simple acoustic guitar for music. Guests will all be immediate family, grandparents and a few close mutual friends. My sister, my MOH, will wear a short navy blue dress and Nick’s brother, BM, and him will wear khaki suits with navy blue ties. I’m going to try on my mother’s dress and my grandmothers’ dresses while I’m home over Christmas (I’m currently living in NYC for graduate school. My fiance is back in North Dakota where we met). I’d really love a dress with lots of beautiful lace, with straps (ahem, chesty.) and that accentuates my waist and (ahem) assets. Hopefully one of those dresses will work out, with alterations. My bouquet will be pale pink peonies.
Following the ceremony, the 30 guests will have a cocktail hour with snacks and toasts and photos in the backyard, and then we’ll all migrate to a local CSA farm that a family friend has for the open house.
We’ll have a big white tent set up near the barn and string white lights up in on the inside, the perimeter of the tent will be mason-jar lanterns that I’ll make. Round tables will be centerpieced by bouquets of pink peonies and white and ivory candles.
Food and drinks will be buffet style, people just helping themselves when they feel like it. We didn’t want to do a formal dinner with a head table and all that. We want to mingle and have it be very casual.
Instead of cake, we’re going to do an ice cream sundae bar with all kinds of crazy toppings.
We’ll have a dance floor, but Nick and I will just create an iPod playlist and hook it up to good speakers.
Honeymoon will be a week-long canoeing and camping trip in northern Minnesota. We love camping and the outdoors.
What do you guys think?! I’m so excited.
