i am moving to germany for 3 months as of may 16. i think i’m excited as its is something ive wanted to do for a while but i am really nervous about leaving my SO i love him to bits and even the odd night apart is horrible, neither of us sleep and then when we do see each other again its amazing. a weeks girly holiday in the summer was hard and i could text him then. contact will be limited to pen and paper letters as it will be too expensive to call. anybody got any tips to try and make this work?

So sorry for your situation. Will you have a computer there? skyping is free.

I was going to second the Skype idea. I am in a long distance marriage 6 months of the year, so we Skype all the time!

I will definately have to investigate the skype/internet/computer situation. at the moment i have a netbook that hardly works and he has a laptop which we share so obvs he gets to keep the lappy when i go. fingers crossed i will be able to afford my own before i go.

I think it actually sounds romantic (the pen and paper letter writing) and 3 months will fly by.
I remember your other post and I think it is fantastic that you are doing this and following your dreams to to to Germany!
My Fiance just left for London and he is there for the next 3-5 months on and off.
We use google voice (calling London from the US via the app is $0.02 per minute), not sure if they have an international version though.
We also use Skype and e-mail.
I miss him a lot, but it’s kind of nice to have the time to myself to do some things for me.
I think being able to maintain a relationship long distance is a good indicator of the strength of the relationship. If it is meant to be the LDR will only make it stronger.
The first few weeks will be VERY hard, but you’ll get into the swing of things and before long it’ll be time to come back.
I used to not see my Fiance over the summers in college (about 3 months) and saying goodbye was always so hard, but before I knew it I was back at school with him.
I wish you all the best of luck and use the time away from him to grasp this new opportunity and really pour yourself into it!
Hopefully the time away will also help him realize how much you do for him and how much he really does appreciate you.

Thankyou, that has really filled me with confidence about going and i’m really looking forward to it. I will have a look at google vice. having checked on the vodafone website it will cost me 75p for an hours chat as i have vodafone passport so it won’t be too bad. I hope it does just make us stronger. I am now feeling hopeful rather than very apprehensive.
