Sooo jealous. I want to honeymoon in Greece so badly, but I have a feeling I will end up in the Caribbean. Enjoy you lucky dog!
You may find it cheaper (but more time-consuming, yet a beuatiful trip) to tae a Dolphin Flyer or other ferry to Santorini.
So jealous! I wanted to go to Greece so bad but I left my husband talk me out of it for a cheaper Carribean honeymoon.
Greece is my most favorite place in the world! Unless you really love cities, I would spend less time in Athens and more time on the islands. Take a ferry-they're really cheap. Santorini is incredible.
I'm jealous of you. I would have loved to go to Greece for our HM. Congrats and I'm sure you'll have a great time there.
I'm so jealous! Greece is on my bucket list of places to travel!
AHH awesome! We are planning on doing that for our "Big Honeymoon" next year! You'll have so much fun!
Woohoo! Air miles TOTALLY pay off! We didn't even think we would get a honeymoon at all and then my grandma offered us to let us use her miles. She says she doesn't need them because she is old haha.
@brenda.m.fields: I totally want to do the ferry route. I am a little concerned that they won't have any though, since we are going in November (the cool season). What do you think?
@nikole.powell.np: There should be ferries in November, but the operators won't release schedules until maybe October.
Yay that's where we're going too! My FI has been saving his miles since college lol- so we didn't have to pay for our flights (otherwise there's no way we'd be able to afford it).
I think we're going to start in Santorini, do the typical honeymoon relaxing thing, then hop around a little bit.
@MissTaken: That sounds awesome! I am in the same boat as you. Definitely wouldn't have been able to afford it without the use of airline miles. My attention has recently been brought to Meteora. It looks AMAZING, you should google it and see what you think! It's in central Greece but would be a really cool day trip I think!
OMG - congratulations, lady! the DH and i are still dreaming of a romantic greece getaway in the not too distant future, so i might need to pick your brain when you return. HAVE SO MUCH FUN!
congrats on the booking! we're going to Greece in June (santorini, mykonos and athens), so happy to share any info if you are interested.
Congrat's we are going to Greece for part of our honeymoon as well, it is part of a 12 day Mediterranean Cruise. So exciting! There are some great travel books out there that map out day trip ideas, some on a budget etc. I bought one online for $10 and are using it to plan out our excursions from sightseeing to food. Bought it at Chapters Indigo not sure if you have access to that store. Enjoy!
@nikole.powell.np: Congrats on booking your honeymoon! In November you won't have to compete with the mass of tourists and accomodations will be cheaper. If you are worried about a ferry in November, you could always fly to Santorini from Athens. We are flying from San to Ath for only $63 each. Although from Mykonos to Santorini you will have to connect in Athens first, so probably better to take a ferry
@lanany10: I'm going to those places in June too! Only in reverse order (Athens, Mykonos, Santorini). Where are you staying? Our hotel in Santorini is over looking the caldera and volcanos, with our own little private balcony. I can't wait.
Yay Greece!
That's super exciting!! Greece is on my to-do list for next year!
@lanany10 and RoundSolitaire : We are going to Greece in June too! We are starting in Santorini, then going to Naxos, and wrapping up in Athens. And RoundSolitaire, the place that we are staying on Santorini sounds just like the place that y'all are going to stay!
Congrats! We just booked ours last week to Greece! Spending 2 days in Athens, 4 days in Santorini and 3 days in Mykonos. SO excited!
We are visiting a couple of Greek islands on our Med cruise and http://www.athensguide.com/index.html has been really helpful.
so funny that we are all planning trips there at the same time. i have to admit, i'm a bit worried about the political issues, but hopefully things are a little calmer by then. we're staying at the gold suites in santorini, mykonos grand in mykonos, and hotel bretagne in athens. our hotel in santorini overlooks the volcano and caldera too - i'm pretty sure most of the hotels in santorini have the same view :)
if you dont mind - i would love to hear more information about this! your budget, how long your staying & any helpful tips of finding resorts/hotels etc!
congratulations!
@lanany10: I just did a quick search on those hotels and damn girl, those are some fancy accomodations you have booked! Our hotel in Athens (Central Athens, with a rooftop hottub and Acropolis views) and Mykonos (Mykonos Beach Hotel) are nice ands close to town, but definitely not top notch luxury. But we splured in Santorini with the Volcano View Villas. We are going to Paris and Nice too before Greece, and so we went middle-line in Paris and an intimate B&B in Nice.
I am a little worried about political unrest too. But FI is keeping me calm. And FI's parents, who are over protective and worry about Everything (with a capital E) aren't at all concerned....So I figure if they think it's safe, I should too.
@boaconstrictor: Thanks for the website. It's bookmarked in the "honeymoon" tab of my favourites!
From everything I've read (and I've done a good amount of research), there is nothing to worry about re:political unrest.
As long as you stick to the touristy sites in Athens, it seems that you probably won't even notice anything going on.
As far as the islands go, there is supposed to be absolutely no signs of political unrest on any of them, so I feel very comfortable.
If you are into looking at tripadvisor forums, they have a plethora of threads on the topic :)
Oh, and as far as where we are staying, we don't have Athens or Naxos booked yet, but we are staying at Nostos Apartments on Santorini, and I can't wait!!!
We are still trying to figure out the rest of our itinerary. Lefkada is a must for us because I have family there which will be really neat to see! I SO HAVE to see Meteora. I think that for us, our honeymoon will be 1 part vactation and 9 parts trip. We want to see Meteora and possibly the Diros Caves.
@Evie19: Have you been to those places? What do you think?
I totally want to see Santorini for the white buildings and blue domed roofs but it would add so much more to our trip than just to rent a car and drive to Diros Caves, Lefkada, Meteora, and then back to Athens to fly out. I can't decide what to do, I just want to see it ALL!
