I can't wait to hear about your trip. That's where we are planning on going as well, just the greece part, not England. With maybe a side trip to Italy :)
@notevenclose: Oh Italy would be AMAZING too...we thought about going there as we have an extra week..but man is Europe expensive...:(
Your trip sounds lovely... I loved the greek islands but athens itself was a big let down for me.. hope you have a better experience! and England is awesome!
@MrsNeutrino: I havent heard much good stuff about Athens...we are going to spend 1.5 days there (one night) so hopefully that will be enough..but not to much...
YAY for European honeymoons! Your trip sounds divine!
We were in Athens for about 1.5 and for us it was more than enough! We hit the major sights that we wanted to see.
The villa in Oia looks fantastic!
Exciting! We're also planning to go to Greece - to Athens, Santorini, and Crete.
I've been to Athens before and while people are right that it's kind of underwhelming as a destination (it reminds me a lot of LA - hot, crowded, and sprawling), there are some amazing things there. It's definitely worth a day or two in Athens to see the Parthenon.
@Baileyh: I am so excited for you! We are also going to Santorini and Mykonos (and then heading over to Italy) for our honeymoon in October.
I think your villa in Santorini looks amazing!! Every place I've looked at is much much more than that (including the place we've booked), so I think you got a great deal! When are you taking your honeymoon?
That is sooo exciting!!! Ah jealous!! Were you guys not able to take a honeymoon right after your wedding? We are just starting to plan our vacation for the end of the year and just looking up stuff gets me giddy!
@Baileyh: So glad you will be coming to my beautiful country!
I think you have to know where to go in Athens and youll see how great a city it is- there are a few bad neighborhoods in the central area that you can avoid. Most tourists understandably do not know where the nicest parts of the city are.
In Athens, go to Thissio, walk on the cobblestone streets and go to Plaka for dinner. Those are two gorgeous areas in the city. Also, you can go to the rooftop of the Hilton or Grande Bretagne to their rooftop bars at night that are luxe and have an amazing night view of the city.
The new Acropolis museum is fantastic by the way. It would be a shame to see the little time in Athens as time just to pass quickly...
Enjoy! Santorini is one of my favorite islands!!
So excited to read all of this - we are going to Greece for our honeymoon as well. Staying 10 days in Athens - Santorini - Crete - back to Athens. We have 4 days total in Athens alone, and even though pp mentioned underwhelming experiences there, we plan to make the most of it. That is why we are island hopping too, so we can see the more romantic/beach sides in addition to the historical landmarks. I cannot wait!
Sounds fabulous! We're doing something similar. Flying to Rome then Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. We're most likely staying at the Mykonos Grand. My bestie stayed there last year for her honeymoon and said it's the most amazing resort she has been to anywhere.
@krobbie: we are going in June! :)
@PitBulLover: We probably could have gone right after the wedding but it would have been hard. I only get three weeks vacations and DH doesnt get anything, so we had taken off 1.5 weeks for the wedding (wedding and short mini moon to the island) so we felt if we postponed it for a year we could invest more time into it (and save up more money so we could have a nice trip). I have actually found planning the honeymoon more stressful (and more expensive) then the wedding!! so i am really really really glad i waited now! Where are you planning yours?
@Evie19: ohht thank you so much for the tips..im writing them down!
@808mjm202: Island hopping will be the best! We wanted to do more islands but were advised against it bc of our time frame...i wante dto go to Corfu and Crete though!
Hey for all you ladies that have done research or have gone to Mykonos...I want to book a hotel and surprise my hubby with one thats really nice...but we are on a budget
(damn you money!!!). I looked at the Mykonos Grand but its so far out of our budget i didnt even laugh....
We are looking at about 150.00 a night (CAD) so about 110 Euros a night.....pref something right on the beach..or very close...any suggestions?
Are you sold on Mykonos? Some of the smaller islands have rooms for that price at really nice hotels. We're going to Santorini and Paros, and found an amazing deal in Paros for only 90 euros.
@808mjm202: where are you going in Crete? From everything I read, Iraklion isn't really as nice as some of the other cities like Chania, but my fiance really, really wants to go to Knossos.
I spent 10 days in Italy/Greece in high school, and can't wait to go back someday! You will have such a good time!
@NauticalBride2011: yeah unfortunatley all the ferries are booked for there etc. We are only there for four nights....
When we were looking for hotels in Mykonos, I found the Vencia Hotel and thought the rates (for some of the rooms) seemed reasonable. I'm not sure how close it is to the beach, but it gets good reviews on trip advisor! Here's a link: http://www.vencia.gr/index.php (I hope it works!).
@Baileyh: Yeah I think the researching part is fun but the planning can be stressful. We plan to go on a cruise. Were looking at one that goes to the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St Thomas and Turks and Caicos. Im sure once you are in Greece though you will be soooo happy that you took on the stress of planning a wonderful trip!
oooh, we are doing Greece and Italy, too! England sounds awesome though :-)
We are flying into venice and taking a cruise around Greece. Can't wait!! *squee!!*
@Baileyh: Ah gotcha. Well I checked out Tripadvisor.com (love that site), and here are some hotels that they list in your price range, including one that has an offer for 80 euros a night!
We checked out all of our hotels through tripadvisor at the advice of my of my well-traveled friends who swear by it :) I've never been to any of these hotels though, so I can't give you a personal review, unfortuantely. Good luck and SO EXCITING! Yayyy Greece!
@Entangled: Yes we are staying in Iraklion. I think it is a good location to visit all the sites from. Convenient to the airport or ferry landing.
@NauticalBride2011: do you know if theses are on the beach ( or any beach) I dont know the area at all so am having a hard time differing about areas.
@808mjm202: We'll probably end up doing that as well. I'm tempted to try to explore southern Crete, but feel like it might just be an overwhelming amount of travel.
@Baileyh: No idea. But through each of those links you can look at a map. And I'm sure in the reviews/descriptions they might give some indication.
We're going to be in Greece in June too, I'm totally stoked! I messaged earlier to say I'd give you tips, but my iphone seems to have eaten it... not that it matters anyway, since you'll be there before we're back, most likely.
We're cruising though, so I'm not much help on the hotel front...
Your honeymoon sounds amazing!! I've never been to Greece, it's definitely on the list. Can't wait to read recaps.
@SapphireSun: I didnt know that!!! pfft. We will need to get together in July and share some stories!! :)
@Baileyh: Yeah, it was kind of last minute... our NYC trip fell through, and I was annoyed about our only vacation this year being to go to his sister's wedding (long story about that particular resentment) so he offered up a Mediterranean cruise and you better believe I snapped that right up.
Haha, maybe we'll bump into you at the Acropolis or something :)
@SapphireSun: how awsome would that be!!! :)
I just booked my accomodations for Mykonos today!! getting really excited now!
@Baileyh: Your honeymoon looks like it is going to be awesome! We are also really considering Greece among other locations and trying to pin down a honeymoon asap! Do you have any idea (or anyone else know this...) how warm it is/how swimmable the beaches are at the time you are going? I've heard it is fairly chilly in the Mediterranean in early June?
@snuggles: I havent heard to much but i was told its warm...i think the avergae temp is 27 or so...so not crazy hot but not cold either.
That hotel looks amazing. So cute and blue and white. And seriously, how perfect does the blue myth retaurant look?
That is awesome.....make sure you eat in the Plaka district by the Parthenon...the best food we had on a trip there a couple years ago.
Have Fun!
@snuggles:The Mediterranean is BOILING HOT in the summer! In early June the temps should be high 80's already, and water temperature will be in the 70's. My husband can't take the heat in the summer so we're heading to Turkey tomorrow and will be in a resort on the Mediterranean coast in two weeks.
@Baileyh: Sounds awesome! You'll have a great time.
@Baileyh: My sister and I stayed at the Hotel Hermes and loved it. There's a pool, view of the sea, and it's a short walk down into the town we were nearest. We were super poor at the time, and I remember it being a tiny splurge but still totally affordable. I'd absolutely recommend it. Have so much fun!
