...because I'm a big dork.
What operating system are you using on your personal computer? (work computers only count if they let you choose your own OS)
Our college refuses to use Vista, which tells me something...
Mac Leopard for me for my laptop, my desk top is window xp, my work is leopard and vista I have two computers at work.
wow, @chaotic bliss, I see why your life is so chaotic ;) 4 computers?! do your eyes ever rest from the glare?
ETA - I changed the poll so girls with multiple computers can vote multiple times :)
Leopard here. I have a PC laptop with Windows XP, but I've basically handed it over to FI because i only like working on the Mac. I'll be buying a Macbook soon.
XP (I think) that's what's on my computer @ home. I'm not sure what's at school. Maybe XP? It's windows, and not Vista.
I use leopard. Honestly after my last dell (with xp) broke I was just going to get another pc because macs are more expensive... but I could not find ANY pcs that still carry xp and I refuse to use vista. Thus, I became a mac-girl and I've never been happier with a computer ;)
I'm definitely a Mac! :)
I use Windows XP at work, and my FI has Windows XP but Office 2007, which I regularly use for homework, because it trumps my Office for Mac, even though it's the student edition.
I'll never buy another PC, for myself. :)
You know, I used to use the "macs are more expensive" line too, but I paid $400 more for my HP 2 years ago than I did for my Mac this summer, and my Mac is a nicer computer. I bought refurb online and saved a few hundred off the regular price. :)
I don't have any computers running vista/7. But between bf and I, we've probably got a nice smattering of every other OS, except for the newer Mac ones... maybe 10.3 is the highest we have? I certainly have a PB running OS 9 tucked away in a closet...
On my day to day compy, I use XP.
@daydream - my Mac was cheaper than all of the PC's I was interested in, and I upgraded the ram. I got a student discount (Apple gives one every fall) which really helped, though. And a free iPod. :)
@daydreamwanderer- sounds like you got a great deal. I just bought my mac from the apple store so it was full price. With AppleCare (which I am SO glad I got because I just had to have my hard drive replaced this week and it was free!), I think I paid about $1500. My prior dell laptop was only about $1000. I think PCs can be more expensive but the basic ones are pretty cheap. Macs are harder to find the cheap versions because all of their laptops just rock. :)
@corgi - that's very true. I wasn't willing to settle on a cheap laptop; I thought spending $1400 meant I would get a computer that would work for a while - not break beyond reasonable repair in just over a year and a half! It was going to cost more to fix than it was worth... so I let J talk me into finally switching over. :)
I chose XP and Vista. At home our laptop has Vista, our desktop has XP. At work, both my computers have XP.
Snow Leopard! They tell you that if you are using Tiger still, you have to buy a whole suite of programs to switch, but it's not true. FI and I bought a family pack of Snow Leopard for only about $30 from Amazon, and both love it.
I also got the education discount with my Mac, it was still pricey, about $1,000 with an IPod that I got a rebate for in the mail and extra memory added to my computer. It has been well worth the money - never had a problem in the three years I've had it.
i use vista only because that's what came on my computer! luckily i haven't had any issues at all with it so far! i really want to get a mac though... i'm thinking once this one dies on me that's what i'll go for :)
XP for now but I will soon be upgrading to Windows 7 thanks to the nice $30 price tag for students. Husband has Vista on his laptop but is using a release candidate of Windows 7 and he loves it. His student email is still active so he'll be using the student discount to upgrade as well.
I can't remember the last time I used a Mac. I think it may have been way back in high school (we're talking over 15 years ago. I'm old).
Im still on leopard - There are some programs I use that say they aren't compatible with snow leopard so I am going to wait a bit!
Love my mac - never going back to PC!
XP on both lappy and desktop. We need to get new computers, ours are pretty old.
ok, I added Windows 7 to the poll... I'm obviously out of the windows loop, because I didn't realize they had released new software. :)
@future mrs. martin, just curious, which programs? Snow Leopard is really just a cleaned up, slightly modified version of Leopard. The big differences are that it runs faster, freezes up less, and is organized a bit better. There are some fun sort features and short cuts, too, but besides that I haven't noticed a difference.
Windows XP and Leopard for two computers at work. Vista on my laptop at home - hate it!!!!!!!!! One of these days I'll be able to afford a mac for my home computer LOL.
I switched over to Linux at home after I got a virus on the Vista that came with my machine and was too lazy to clean it off. It's been almost a year and I think the only thing I miss about Windows is the Office suite...PowerPoint especially is better than the OpenOffice version. Like Tessabelle said, the $30 price tag for Windows 7 for students is awesome, once that comes out I'm going to install it in a virtual machine (VirtualBox is great and free) on my Linux box. Best of both worlds!
I'm a Vista user. I used it for about a year without any problems, then I installed their Service Pack and my hard drive died. Probably conicidental (since I know nothing about computers) but the timing couldn't have been worse-it was the week of the wedding!
I have to use stupid Windows XP at work, but I prefer using my iMac at home with Leopard. It's soooooooo much better.
"chose" to use is such a tricky statement. Vista came with my computer. If i could have afforded it, I would have gotten a Mac laptop instead and chosen to use their OS X operating system. Although, I must say, Vista doesn't upset me as much as I expected it to when I bought the laptop. For me, its been amazingly stable and mostly non-annoying (although, asking me for permission for every single little tiny thing makes me want to scream).
Mac Leopard at work and Mac Snowleopard at home!
I used 2 computers at work so I also have one running Windows XP.
Yaay for Macs!
I'm pleasantly surprised at the no. of Mac users :)
i have windows xp on my old laptop and got excited that my new laptop would be up to date with vista THEN THEY CAME OUT WITH WINDOWS 7. ugg its impossible to keep up.
@rabbit - 2 years ago when I bought my HP I was saying almost exactly what you said here - and I realized how wrong I was about the expense when I bought my Mac this summer :) I expect the mac to last a lot longer too, so it's definitely a good investment. But I'll stop being a walking advertisement now :)
About the permissions thing on Vista (which I ran for a year and a half until my HP brutally collapsed in the middle of the semester), it is possible to change those settings. Poke around and see if you can't do it. :)
I have XP, but Windows 7 is sitting on my porch at home. ;) I'm installing it this weekend.
I'm horrible. I don't know. I'm going back and forth between the desk top and a couple laptops so it's hard to keep track. One is Windows XP, one is Vista, and I think the other is like a Windows 6 or something. I know what they are I just have trouble keeping track of which one I'm on. lol. Which is probably pretty lame.
@His Barista - I was hoping someone wouldn't know :) I mean, that's why I put the option up there! At least you know what you're running somewhere, if not where each one is :)
I have Tiger on my Macbook Pro because I've been too lazy to upgrade. Besides, the computer is like three years old or more (first generation MBP), with very little hard drive space left and it's starting to become a bit sluggish (though today I made it a little better by adding one extra gig of ram, so no more beachballing when having 30 tabs open in Firefox), so I'm hoping to get a new MBP at some point in the next year or so, and that would be Snow Leopard. But for now, my Tiger MBP works fine :)
I also have an old Dell laptop with Windows XP but I don't use that laptop anymore. Fiance has a new MBP with Snow Leopard (it's from work, not a personal laptop, though he did get to choose which computer to get) and a Linux box at home that he built himself a couple years ago.
I have vista on my laptop and I really like it. I haven't had any problems with it so far and I've had my laptop since Christmas. That being said, I will probably get Windows 7 for my laptop eventually. I think, from the sound of it, that it works much better than vista. My FI has Windows XP on his desktop and that works wonderfully, as well.
