I like it because the secretaries can IM me to see if I want to have a call hold if I am already on the phone. I can type "hold" or "msg". Of course, we do use it for gossip as well- but I really do use it for work functions!
I don't use it now - too busy to talk! When I did used to IM, it was with Meebo.
When I worked at a pharmaceutical company, we used Microsoft Office Messanger. It was a really good way to keep in contact w/ coworkers. Now that I work for a hopsital, there is no IM'ing...huge HIPPA violation. But I love to GChat with FI or some of my besties during the day if I have the chance.
I have Pidgin installed on my work computer since it combines all of my chat clients into one. I use it all day long and couldn't live without it.
I used to use Gchat at my old job. At my current job, everyone just discovered Skype. It's hilarious but a disaster at the same time.
Because I don't have anyone to Gchat with anymore...Weddingbee is what keeps me sane. ;)
I use Trillian which combines AIM, Gchat, FB chat, etc. We are actually required to have some kind of IM name and are supposed to have it on at all times so we are able to talk to each other.
However, everyone is also allowed to talk to people outside of work so I talk to my FI every day.
I use meebo and google..couldnt work without it..gets me thru my day as well!
I wish I had time for things like that. I don't work in front of a computer so I wouldn't be able to anyways, but even so, I barely have time to acknowledge my co-workers much less IM random people.
I use it, but only when I have some time or need a break. Our work actually has an in-house IM service so they allow it between co-workers. Then I use other clients for my friends, but I sign out if I need to focus.
At work we have an interoffice IM system that I use with co workers but I use Gchat w/ a few friends.

I'm just curious whether any of you GChat or use other instant messengers at work? It's one of the few things that keeps me sane during the day--I use it instead of leaving my desk to go chat with coworkers! Do any of you guys do this? If not, how do you stay sane during the day?
