If you could only have ONE species of pet for the rest of your life, what would you pick? Explain why! And feel free to share a photo of your current beloved of your chosen species!
I personally love animals of all kinds. I have three cats, a dog, a horse, and a fish, plus we've owned bunnies, guinea pigs, ferrets, and birds in the past. But if I had to only have one type for the rest of my life, I would probably choose dogs, just because you can do so much more with them. Granted, my cat knows how to sit on command, meows on cue, and waits to eat until I tell him he can, (and he begs at the table; my DOG doesn't beg at the table!). But cats are awful hard to take for walks, for example. And agility courses are pretty much out of the question. Hmm..wouldn't THAT be a sight?!
Your turn!
Dogs! All the way. Dogs are adorable, cuddly, loyal, always willing to cheer you up when you are depressed and cuddle you when you are cold. I would never give up my dogs. They are my children.
Out of all the choices above, I would pick cats because they are the most independent and self-reliant. We love animals, but something that is very high-maintenance just would not work for me & hubby!
Cats. They clean themselves, sleep, eat, and otherwise do whatever the heck they want; they are clearly superior to all other beings. :P
Oh my goodness, I just can't choose between my cat and my horse. Seriously, I don't think I could!
So hard to choose, since I love animals... but who could ever deny the Wonderdog!
Pfft, a horse all the way. I wanna ride into the sunset like a cowboy!
I too love ALL animals. We have cats, a dog, and a lizard so far. But, if I could only have one I'd definitely have to go with dogs. Like you said, you can do much more with them, but also they seem to give you so much more in return. When you've had a long/hard day at work it is hard not to smile when someone greets you so enthusiastically with a wagging tail at the door.
Definitely a dog I love ALL dogs - They are FMMs best friends!
LOVE the dogs and so does Teddy! We both really dont like cats lol. Bad experiences in the past with them! So this is an easy one!
I am totally a cat person (hellooooo have you seen my smushy faced boys?) but it could be because I never really had my own dog (just like DH never had cats and now i see him with mine and know it's L-O-V-E lol). I had a lab growing up from like, age 13, but he was technically my brother's dog so I didn't really get the experience.
All in all, I like "easy" pets and cats are very easy to take care of. But i'm really prejudice about cats--it HAS to be the smushy persian ones; it's all i've ever had!!!!
Dogs!! I LOVE dogs...have always had them growing up....and can't imagine ever having anything else.
Here's my furbaby Kyra...she is a chow chow and is super fluffy right now because it's winter.
I would definitely have dogs, aka Cairns and Westies! I love my pooch and couldn't imagine life without her. But I am a little skewed as my birds died when I was little and it was a little overwhelming for a 6 year old.
I have a dog but I have always been a cat person. Cats are not as high maintanance as dogs are. My dog is attached to my hip sometimes. She follows me around everywhere I go. I know it's cute at first but it can get annoying. She's a needy dog and I thought Shar pei's were suppose to be more independent. Not this one. lol I love her though, she is such a cute and sweet dog.
Oh, there was an article out there that could determine some personalities based upon whether you were a cat or a dog person. Yeah, I looked at it and I'm still definitely a cat person and DH is a dog person.
So even though I have a dog, I voted for horses. Probably not always feasible, though.
The horse isn't mine, but she is the one I ride the most (though sadly that has been cut back a lot with school). My FI's family have 5. "Mine" is the one in front; her mamma is in the background, but we don't have her anymore. The mom had a horrible temperment. This was taken this time last winter. FI and my first date was horseback riding!

my dad's allergic to dogs, so after moving in with my fi i now get to have my first dog ever.... and i love him. hopefully i'll forever have a dog now.
I would have to say DOGS (and several of them!) I grew up with cats, dogs, a horse, bunnies, chickens, ducks, hamsters, fish, turtles...and anything else my parents came across looking for a home. I currently have 2 dogs and can't wait to get out of the city and own some land so we can add a few more animals. I harbor a secret dream of opening a b&b in the middle of nowhere in a house FI and I built ourselves on a huge plot of land surrounded by nothing but trees (and maybe a little lake or pond!). It's not likely to ever happen, but hopefully someday I'll actually have a real backyard. NYC is great in a lot of ways, but that's one thing I really regret=(
EDIT: I should also note FI had NO pets growing up, so even my 2 dogs have taken some getting used to for him. The menagerie I have in mind may take some convincing on my part!!
Dogs are the only species which have evolved alongside mankind, to the betterment of both species. I'd choose dogs anyday and twice on Sundays!
@twalilia - you sound like my kind of girl! I have similar dreams. Mine are a little more along the lines of a hobby farm/mini santuary, I want a cow, and an alpaca, and a couple horses, (I would LOVE to have a pair and have a little business on the side doing horse carriages for weddings), a goat, (hubby made me promise if we get a hobby farm, HE gets a fainting goat! LOL!), and of course, several dogs and cats! My hubby is a cat person, and that's about it. He loves OUR dog, but has a take-it-or-leave-it type attitude about most other dogs and other animals.
I simply cannot do it- I love them all! This might have something to do with me being in vet school right now! I guess I could still play with the other species at work... but nah, I'm gonna have to select 'all of the above' Kthanks :)
I asked this question of my honey and he countered with lots more questions. In this scenerio, where would he be located? If he was on a desert island, he'd want a monkey so it could climb for mangos and coconuts and he could teach it sign language... (he way overthought this). If he was in a town, he'd want a dog. If it was a survival thing, he'd want a pig (it could hunt for truffles or be eaten if needed).
I think he might have put too much into the question, but I thought his responses were cute.
DOG!!! But since I'm marrying someone that's super allergic to them, I don't think that's happening. We've been talking about a pig though!
My DH and I got two lab mix pups from a family member as a wedding gift. They are six months old now....and are going to be fixed. We love them SO much! They are like kids! We have a BIG snow here in Ky right now, and they just love playing in it.
Meet Samson (2nd pic) & Delilah (1st pic):
Mrs. DG - Your husband sure is creative! I just meant what kind of pet in general, of course, but his idea is cute. You should start a scenario thread to see what other creative responses people come up with. Bees are nothing if not creative! :)
That was a really tough choice!!! I love all kinds of animals, but I have always had cats so that is what I chose :) I have a ragdoll kitty and he is the love of my life (besides my FI)!
Both hands down DOG!! I love dogs.. I dont have one yet cause I dont have my own place but once we move out we are planning on getting a CHOW-CHOW!! they are way too adorable and i cant wait to snuggle with it..
Oh my.. i just love those dogs.. those are not mine.. I just found a picture to share with all of you how cute they are!!
We've had dogs most of our lives but I have never lived with a cat and I like the idea that they are less maintenance meaning don't have to take for walks, easier to have pet sat, etc. Of course they come with maintenance depending on the breed but the hubs finds it much easier. Like right now we have trouble walking our 85lb dog or shall I say the dog walks us. My hubs is suffering from a herniated disc and I being pregnant have constant back soreness and pain and with my FIL not being able to walk the dog, my hubs get screwed walking him. If our pooch was easier to walk it would be one thing but he pulls me around.
Anyway, don't get me wrong, I LOVE dogs I just don't think we are a good fit for them right now. We will never get rid of Buddy but we may take a long break after his passing before we bring anymore pets, especially a dog into the house.
I voted dog, but I would have voted other and then "Standard Poodle" for the rest of my life. Everyone I know who has had a standard (this doesn't always hold true for toys or mini's) agree's, once you have one, it's really hard to have any other kind of dog. They are like humans, the most intellegent breed, and their personalities and traits are so individual and rediculously amazing there's no way I can ever go any other direction.
There is also a saying, "standard poodles are like pringles, you can't stop at just one." I REALLY want a 2nd.... but I can't even tempt that until we buy a house, get married, and are more financially stable/combined/etc. Darn it.
But, ya, they are not the frou-frou dogs everyone thinks. Mine is all boy, loving water, mud, snow, and whatever else he can find. Their spirit of adventure is amazing.
I've had all kinds of pets... dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, lizards, fish, etc. It's got to be dogs. Cats are nice, and I absolutely loved the cat that I had when I went away to college that was actually all mind and not a family pet. But... cat's are more independent and less expressive. Dogs need you, they cuddle with you, they can go places with you (I take my dog to most parties... couldn't really do that with a cat haha). I love them all but if forced to choose I'm a dog person.
I will say this though-- cats are easier to take care of! Definitely can't leave a dog for a weekend with an auto-feeder like you can a cat :)
Stew (also... its harder to get a cat to wear a hat):
Cats. I grew up with cats, so I am most comforatble with them. We really want a dog, but because of where we live it's a little impossible. My husband thought he was a dog person until we got a cat. He thinks he's a cat person now because dogs can be kind of messy. Haha, which is funny since I had to practically beg to get a cat in the first place!
