What’s the best month to have a birthday in? As a Christmas baby I’ve always joked that when it’s time to try for a kid, I’ll be avoiding any time frame that could result in a kid being born around Christmas. It SUCKS and birthdays are such a big deal when you’re little (I have wonderful memories of opening my “birthday gift” on Christmas morning…then having it be the exact same thing my spring-born sibling just opened as a Christmas present). My parents were good about giving me a real birthday party without the Christmas crap every year and keeping gifts seperate, but friends siblings and extended family…ugh.
I always thought late August birthdays were the best. You’re back in school so you get the cupcakes and the birthday ribbons (or whatever the school does) but it’s not too cold to have outside parties or even pool parties and your friends are back home from their summer traveling. There’s also no holidays to compete with! How about you guys? I know a lot of it’s out of control, but just for fun what do you think is the best time for a kid to have a birthday?

Dizbee: No kids here BUT… I like anywhere between May and October. In NH, it’s bound to still be cold in April and even in October chilly… However, winter birthdays can be a good time around here too.
I think I’d only avoid December for Christmas and mid to late May for our anniversary (if we want anniversary trips in the future etc).

I LOVE being a Xmas baby! It’s easy to remember and I dont care much for birthdays anyways. I’d say a Xmas baby would be cool, or June so I have a nice summer maternity leave.

I’ve always thought September would be ideal (oldest in the year, learn to walk when the weather is nice the following summer, nice weather for birthday parties and not in school holidays so friends will be able to attend parties, etc). Happily, our girls were born on the 4th of September, which also happens to be a special day as it’s my mum’s birthday, so I’m a happy bunny!

As a kid I hated the fact that my birthday landed in late august because of school! Lol. I’d be so excited for my birthday then cringe when I remembered its a couple of days after the first day of school or right before. I agree on the Christmas birthday though, my cousin was born on Christmas so all she would get are Christmas gifts. I think an October birthday would be nice, because of the weather here, but its the first month that came to mind lol. I can’t see anything wrong with any month that’s not august or December, and maybe January. 😛 . I never really thought about kids’ birthdays until now, all I knew is that I wanted to try and avoid being 6+ months pregnant in the summer whenever we TTC

Twiglets: I completely agree with September! That’s what we’ll be shooting for this coming year 😉 with October being lovely as well. I also think a spring baby would be great too.
Dizbee: I’d like to avoid Dec/Jan because of the holiday and my Jan. b-day, as well as summer because that makes you the youngest in your grade unless you wait another year to start and it was always fun celebrating your birthday at school…I always felt so special to have my special day with a birthday cake sticker on the classroom calendar! 🙂 (end run-on sentence)
Of course if all my planning (read: obsessing) fails I’m sure a baby’s birthday month won’t really matter that much as long as baby arrives when they are ready. 🙂

I think my daughter has the most perfect birthday (4/8/14) for 2 reasons. #1, I don’t like odd numbers and 4 is my favorite number. #2, she was born at a time where my 12 weeks of maternity leave brings me right to summer break (I’m a teacher), so I get the longest possible maternity leave! Those are pretty selfish reasons I guess, the poor girl will probably always have crappy rainy weather on her birthday 🙁

Dizbee: Summer months. My son’s birthday is in May and my nephews is in June and they get to have beach and lake parties. So much harder to come up with places for the ones whos birthdays are in the winter months.

I am not pregnant yet but I was born in October and always loved it. I never got to have a Halloween themed bday party but my mom baked some “Halloween” Birthday cupcakes for the kids at school and I thought that was kind of neat.

pinkshoes: See, I feel like Christmastime birthdays are less memorable than any other time cause it gets caught up in all the other holiday hullaballo. Even though my parents were generally good about keeping up with my birthday, I heard this a lot: “ohhhh, do you really need a birthday cake? We have so many sweets already! Can’t we just put a candle in your aunt’s Christmas cake?” NO!!! I get that my mom just didn’t want any more sweets in the house, but I bet nobody ever suggested the summer babies substitute their aunt’s fruitcake for a real birthday cake!

Like you, OP, I’m an early January bday and always hated that it gets so mixed up with the holidays and Christmas, plus where we are it’s always so cold and I was never able to do an outdoor party.
Our baby is due in August, which is a good time, but I think if I could pick I’d do late spring – still in school so you can celebrate that way, weather has a chance to be decent, separated from Christmas…

Spring or beginning of summer would be ideal for me.

Dizbee: I am another December baby and as annoying as it was we’re currently planning for a late November/early December baby because it fits in our timeline (and it will be nice to get our first big tax return a few months after the baby is born.)
If not December, I personally would prefer March or April because I live in Florida and would prefer to complete the third trimester in the cooler months of the year. But ultimately, we will most likely get what we get when we get it.

I’m a June baby and it’s perfect. Celebrations with family (and presents hehe) every 6 months 🙂
