I was talking to a co-worker about this and of course I had to poll the Hive.
My DH always puts the seat down. Everywhere. Always. He is considerate.
My dad always put the seat down. Either because Mom made him or because he's considerate.
I have dated men who did not and I honestly wasn't sure that I could (and ultimately didn't obviously) marry a person who didn't have the courtesy to put the seat lid down. I think it's dirty to flush with the lid up, I always put the lid down. I am TOTALLY grossed out by public restrooms where the seat has been left up.
So, fun poll, does your SO put the seat and/or lid down? If your SO is female, what about your dad/stepdad/other man you've lived with?
We always put the lid down on our toilet in our apartment b/c we have one cat that likes to drink toilet water--YUCK!
No, He likes to leave it up. and I actually semi fell in on Saturday. I didn't hit the water, but was definitely in the bowl. I was not happy...
DH does! But it's only been two weeks. Before we got married (we lived separately), I would tell him, "You don't pay the rent here; the seat goes back down." And since we got married and moved in together, no issues. Surprising since his mom was the only female in the house growing up.
My dad left it up. All. The. Time. Which was maddening since the female:male ratio growing up was 3:1...
Always puts the seat down, he is very considerate with those types of things.
@tinkerbee: Ick! I did that once and I had to take a shower afterward. I felt so gross!
Wow I never thought of it before but he's never left it up once.
DH always leaves it up. It used to bug me, but I've made my peace with it. I've beaten enough other bad habits out of him, he can keep this one ;)
FI's mother was in the minority, she had to contend with his father, FI and his 3 brother. When FI went to college, he lived in a dorm and was surrounded by guys. When we moved in together, he was not used to putting the seat down, although he's very respectful in other ways. Our first month of living together, I would comment every time I went into the bathroom and found the seat up. I also explained to him, how dangerous it was when I got up in the middle of the night and that I don't turn the lights on. He understood and now always puts it down.
The rule in my house is you put everything down. That way, 1) I don't have to look in it and 2) its fair to everyone who has to do whatever they need to do with it lol.
Yes. We both close the lid before we flush. I don't understand why most people don't do that.
He always puts it down - the whole thing, including lid. I on the other hand occasionally forget to close the lid when I flush.
I believe my dad has always put it down as well, and over the past couple of years my parents have become super vigilant about always keeping the lid closed because one of their westies is very adorable and very sweet but... well let's just say he's lucky he's cute. They're afraid he's going to end up falling into the toilet and possibly drowning.
yes, I have trained him well. When we first started living together if he forgot I made him go to the bathroom and close it LOL. he learned pretty fast that way! He would always say "sorry punkin" punkin=my nickname from him. lol. he is sooo cute and well disciplined :)
LOL I grew up in a house where it didn't matter how you left the toilet (it was up as much as it was down or all the way closed).
DH was taught that it is ALWAYS down. Only when he's drunk is it ever left up.
i told FI when we first started dating that i hate the seat being left up especially at night since i dont look and fall it and come out a very angry woman. he has put it down ever since lol
My husband is totally "potty trained" and never leaves the seat up. I was the one who "trained" him though:) It completely grosses me out to see an open toilet and he gets that, which is very nice.
Every time! We don't really have a problem with this since we have to keep the lid down anyway. My youngest cat loves to play in water so if the lid is not down she will investigate. Yuck! Once when she was a baby my step-dad left the seat up and the cat fell into the toilet. This happened while I still lived with my parents and my mom had had enough. She put a little sticky note above the toilet that said "Put the lid down so the cats don't drown." The rhyming note was pretty effective.
He always does. Want to know what's funny? I was cleaning the toilet one day and I left it up. Guess who almost fell in? Me! For a split second, I was going to
b&#%* at the DH but then I realized it was me. LOL
Maybe I'm odd here... but I've never understood why it's such an issue! They need it up, we need it down. I don't lift it up to have it ready to go when they use it. Although I grew up in a house where my dad ALWAYS put it down, It's never bugged me even remotely that hubs leaves it up.
***Not that I'm calling out anyone who gets irritated by it, that's just me!***
When we first moved in together, he NEVER put it down, and it drove me crazy. Funnily enough, it made my father angry too, because he saw it as a sign of disrespect to females or something (I know!). For me, it was just gross. He's become much better at remembering to put it down, although he still has his moments, at which point I yell "toilet seat!" and he comes running to put it down.
My husband always does...i think there were 2 times in our relationship where he didn't and he apologized profusely!
My FI never puts the lid dowb.He lets his dog drink out of it for water.Gross I know but for some reason that dog loves toilet water more then water in acontainer. If I DO put the lid down, she will put her head through it and drink the water with the lid on her head.Sigh...So whenever I visit my FI,I gave up trying to get the lid down or changing how he and the dog live.lolThe dog is old though.About 12 years,so no sense in trying to change her.Too old to change now.
he's quite neurotic about it actually! he insists the *we* put the entire toilet lid down BEFORE we flush. I love my looney tune!
Overall he's pretty good at it. Before I moved in, he was constantly worried about remembering to do it, so I think it was ingrained in his memory.
Whenever he slips (probably once a week or so), I always yell "Oh no! I'm going to fall into the toilet!" at which point he yells "Noooo!" dramatically.
My FI and I both have agreed to leave the entire lid down. He is about 99% perfect on it. =o)
My dad and brother both were considerate guys and always put the seat down for me as well.
I have always heard about men leaving the toilet seat up and that always baffled me. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones!
He puts the seat down but not the lid. Something fell off the counter the other day and almost fell in. I wasn't happy. I don't want to be a nag but I hate the lid open!
It feels like he never does--but I guess once in awhile he does. I threated to remove his manhood if he didn't start putting it down...guess he didn't believe me.
I chose some of the time, but really its most of the time. Every once in a while he'll leave it up, but not much
DH and I always put the lid down before we flush. I think I've read way too many statistics about how far fecal particles can fly in the bathroom when the toilet is flushed, and I am grossed out by the thought of NOT putting the lid down!
That being said though, I hate when the lid is down on public toilets - it always makes me think that something didn't flush and the person had to try and hide it (GROSS!) Also, the thought of touching the lid to raise it grosses me out in a public restroom, but not in a private home. Weird, I know.
Should I also mention that I am the kind of person who carries hand sanitizer with me everywhere and goes through it like it's water!? :-)
Argh, no! It's one of the few inconsiderate things that he does :(
He grew up with 3 women in the house....only 2 men. Women won :-D I'm thankful for that.
DH always puts the seat and the lid down.
I just asked DH why and he said he has just always done it that way.
have I mentioned I love my DH.
FI leaves the seat up, I don't care at all. I grew up with 3 brothers, as a kid I'm told they actually trained me to put the seat back up after I peed. The seat thing really doesn't matter to me, I bet if I brought it up to FI he'd make an effort to change, but it's not an issue to me so it's never come up haha.
mine actually always puts the seat AND lid down. i am the one who is usually too lazy to put the lid down lol
