Just received a box on my doorstep from Macy’s! However, I called my Future Mother-In-Law and she told me that I had to wait to open it until after my shower(which is a surprise and I have no idea when it is). However, shouldn’t I open it and get a thank you card out ASAP so that the person knows that we received it?

Do you think she knows who it’s from, and knows that it’s supposed to be a shower gift? I had one gift like this (it actually was from my Mother-In-Law who lives out of town and wouldn’t be able to come to my shower)…but otherwise, you should open it! You are definitely allowed to open wedding gifts when you get them so you can send a thank you note!

I would open it right away and send a thank you. If I was the sender I would want to know it got there safe and sound. Unless the sender will be at the shower, then I might just call to say it arrived and save it to open in front of them.

I would say go ahead and open it. We’ve had two gifts arrive in the mail. I agree with the others…they sent it because they probably won’t be able to make it to the shower. Does your Future Mother-In-Law, by any chance, know who it’s from?
By the way, I’m also in St. Louis!

I would say to open it. Never heard of waiting. 🙂

No, you should not open it until after the shower. You should wait to open and thank until after the shower.

Update: Not a big deal anymore since I HAD MY SHOWER YESTERDAY! The woman who had sent the gift actually came to the shower but she was unsure if she would be able to attend so she had it sent to our house.
Now I have lots of Thank you cards to fill out!
