Congrats!
Does it absolutely need new cabinets or could you strip and refinish them? Sometimes that can really spruce things up!
yeah unfortunately we need brand new ones... they are from like the 40s which initially i thought "awesome! vintage!" then i got there and they are pretty beaten up lol plus they only have a very short row in right now, so we would definitely need to add more cabinetry for the extra storage space
Ikea has awesome cabinets that are relaticvely inexpensive! Plus you can add their lighting etc to make it look fresh and modern. And they have accessories you can add later too like pull-out metal drawers for your pots.
they have holes in them lol apparently someone got angry with a hammer or something
Congratulations, bloodgo1! It's pretty exciting, huh? One of the major headaches for us with our new house was the kitchen. (Think homemade 60's era plywood cabinets with yellowed varnish, mismatched hinges and plastic pulls. Until we can afford to just rip everything out and start over, we decided to paint it all out white and change all of the hardware. It honestly looks great. Paint gives you MAJOR bang for the buck! So don't despair, you have options!
Good luck! :o)
welllll we can't just repaint them though, because there are literally holes all over the size of a fist lol so we'll have enough to rip them out as long as i do it on a major budget but i haven't found anywhere else besides Ikea that seems to be affordable enough
Congrats! You'd be surprised, at Lowes and Home Depot you can get some premade cabinets that are really nice and pretty inexpensive. The part that costs the most with cabinets is usually the install labor, so if you can do it yourself you'll save yourself a good amount of $$!
If the actual cabinet boxes are hole-free, you could just replace the doors. Just take the measurements to your local hardware store and they can cut it for you. (We had to do that with one of our doors.) Also, Home Depot offers a service called "kitchen resurfacing" where they replace the doors with nice new ones and cover the existing cabinets with a matching laminate. Just another option! :o)
Try the apartmenttherapy website - it's like weddingbee for home decor.
I dont know if you have this store where you are but we use "surplus warehouse" they have great deals, cabinets come unfinished so you would need to paint them but it is well worth putting your own sweat equity in to save a lot of $$.
Sorry no one seems to see they DO have HOLES in them.
Unfortunately, Kitchens are the one place that eats up the MOST money! However, done well and you WILL recoup those costs. Def. check home depot etc... however, I would think your looking at a good 10k + project. Most kitchen rehabs are in the 50K range :-( Kitchens and bathrooms cost a LOT, but like I said, they're worth it!
The house we have an offer on has low grade cabinets but they're in decent condition. I'm still trying to get good word on how "paintable" they are because I don't know how well you can sand a particle board, but I'd love to paint them black! On the flip side, the master bath needs a complete overhaul and it's prob. going to cost 10-20k. :-(
Good luck, can't wait to see pics! Before AND after!
I had studied interior design and decor, I can give you my opinion; any pics?
Like mentioned, new hardware, paint, refinishing...can all do wonders at a low cost.
What area are you in get a post out with the area looking for anyone who knows a vendor.
we just redid our cabinets! My hubby's bachelor house had a HORRIBLE kitchen. The cabinets were stained and warping and starting to FALL APPART!
Lowe's was like 2-3x what we paid just for cabinets for our entire remodel, including granite countertops! Most of the cheap places are just random local places. What we did was call Service Magic, and they had 4 or 5 local businesses come do free estimates for us. One was a lot less than the rest, since they don't have a store front/warehous, and just ship everything straight to your house. It was a little messier, but it's hard to care that much when you save THOUSANDS. Try to get at least 3 estimates!
Anywho, we were able to get some slightly taller & wider cabinets, plus have them make a rolling island to match, so that really helped our storage issues!
unfortunately i have no suggestions - i`ve never had to even consider where to get new cabinents because my dad makes them.
best of luck though. i know how they can make or break a kitchen.
Well, since you said they're not in good enough condition to just paint them, I second the suggestion about just getting new doors if the "frames" are in decent shape. Is that possible?
I think if you're on a budget you need to decide what's most needed to change (sounds like the cabinets) and change them, then do everything else on a month-by-month basis. It will break up the cost!
Could you just purchase the ones you want a few at a time to replace them? Like maybe you need 12, but you purchase 5 now to replace and then maybe 3 next month, then the last 4 the month after so that you've got a little time to spread out the purchases? I think that might work best for you, in the meantime just put an inexpensive shelf in the kitchen to hold whatever else you need at that moment and buy some cutting boards and cutting mats to use on the kitchen table if you are missing countertops during that time! Good luck!
One thing to keep in mind is that the wood and stain can be different shades in different dye lots... especially for the "cheaper" ones. I you plan on paining them that would be one thing, but I personally wouldn't want to paint NEW ones :-) just something to consider on the idea above.
We're going through that too right now, in the house we put an offer on.... but with floors!
Congratulations!!! We close on our first home tomorrow and also needs a kitchen update. Our cabinet frames are old but sturdy. Check your frames to see if you can keeps those.
We are strpping the paint on the frames and buy just new cabinet doors. We are going to 84 Lumber but Lowe's had good prices on just the doors as well. Check Mr. 2nd's Bargin Outlet or any dicount home supply store.
This is just our starter home so we aren't interested in a full kitchen remodel. But if this is your forever or long-term home, getting all new cabinets would make most sense. It would be silly to spend money for a quick fix then spend more later.

We absolutely LOVE the location and the cute little bungalow style house we'll be moving into right after the wedding. However, the kitchen needs new cabinets and it is pretty small as well. Does anyone know any place that has low cost kitchen cabinets?? I've been looking at ikea, but a lot of it is a bit too modern looking for my taste...
