I generally only use mine for bread dough. I find a regular hand mixer is all that I need for most mixing/baking.
The stand mixer is really only good if you are really heavy into baking- like everyday. OR if you have an attachment that you like to use like the meat grinder or pasta maker.
I use mine for frosting, it makes a huge difference for that! You can really use it for anything you generally use a mixer for, but its not neccesary for most things.
I grew up with a Kitchenaid in our kitchen, so I use it for all baking. Never even touched a handmixer till high school, and I hate using them!
I use my Kitchenaid for cookie dough, frosting, turning egg whites to meringue (fast!), whipping cream (also speedy!), and cakes. My friend throws cooked chicken breasts in it with the paddle for just a few seconds for shredded chicken.
@babylou: ooh good trick with the chicken! I hate shredded it by hand or with a fork.
I wish I had space for it on the counter, then I would use it more. But its a pain to drag it out.
Was thinking about getting one, but dont have the counter space. I am okay with my hand mixed, does pretty much the same thing. Love the color your chose!
I mix hamburger/meatballs using my mixer. It gets everything evenly distributed and I don't have to use my hands haha.
I love mine, it makes everything so easy and fun. Yay mixer!
@babylou: oh yes this chicken trick is AMAZING!!!! I hate shredding chicken by hand!
I got mine for my birthday in July. I love it! Do I *need* to use it for all my mixing? Nope, but I do! It's super handy for when I want to grab or prep something else.
Use it for mashed potatoes, any and all baking, frosting, whipped cream and such. I know you CAN do most of it with a hand mixer however my mixer make it much faster and smoother.
Thanks for all the ideas! Would never have thought of the ground beef, chicken and mashed potatoes!
Great tip about the shredded chicken, I'm going to try that! I love my KitchenAid (okay, I'm spoiled, I have a 10 year old artisan and I bought myself the Architect Pro Series earlier this year, I needed the bigger bowl!).
I have the ice cream bowl attachment which is great, but I'm still learning the ins and outs of it, and the ravioli maker. The ravioli maker is fun, but not something we use often. I wish I had an extra bowl for my artisan, just because of the amount I bake, and the odd time I'm making something that involves mixing a meringue and something oil based and I need a squeaky clean bowl, it's always a pain to empty and clean the bowl (not as much of a problem now that I have a second mixer).
I absolutely love mine and my hand mixer rarely comes out at all any more.
I love mine and use it all the time for all types of baking - cookies, cakes, etc. I also use it regularly for kneading bread dough and homemade pizza dough. It makes the process of baking homemade bread so incredibly easy and quick.
I'm in love with my apple green artisan. We make homemade pizza every Sunday and honestly the best dough recipe I have found after many is the one in the book that comes with it. I don't use it just for baking, but lots of things! Mashed potatos are so good in it. I definetly recommend sn extra bowl; I got the 5 qt glass one last Christmas. So handy when baking alot. Also if you love ice cream, get the ice cream maker! You'll never go back to store bought ice cream again. Our ice cream maker is used so much in this house I'm suprised it's still working!
Don't put your thumb in it.
No joke... I seriously hurt myself pretty bad. I tried to push the bowl down by putting my palm on the edge with my thumb inside.. the beat rolled over it. I then preceded to go into a small bit of shock.. the thumb then turned blue/green.
I love my KitchenAid mixer! I usually just use it for baking, but that's pretty much all I do in the kitchen. :] My mom loves to use her KitchenAid for making tuna fish. She hates getting any of the juice on herself, and she swears that making it in the mixer makes it so much easier!
I didn't read everyone else's responses but I recommend getting an extra bowl and the lids for them. It awesome to be able to chill some cookie dough for later while whipping up some smash potatoes :) If you have the lids than you can stack things on eachother during tight refrigerator times, like holidays.

I'm not much of a baker but I've been trying to do more and I thought this would help. Everyone I know who has one, loves it.
So any advice? What do you use it for? Just baking? Anything else?
This is the one I bought...
