I'm interested to see how it works out for you. I've heard nothing but good things, but since my face is clear 28/31 days of the month, I feel like it might mess it up!
I used to use Proactiv in high school and it worked really well but then when I tried in again in college, it made my face so irritated and red that I couldn't use it anymore. It's at least worth a try since they have the guarantee. I would try one of the other systems if it doesn't work. I've heard good things about Skin ID from Neutrogena.
I tried it, and it didn't work any different than anything else. My dermatologist said it was a waste of money and prescribed me retin-A, which works wonders. There isn't anything special in proactive that isn't in things you could buy at the drugstore. The only proactive product I liked was the mask, which cleared up breakouts almost overnight. But the 3 step system didn't work for me any better than anything else on the market.
I had to vote NO, because when I used ProActive (and used less of the product than they recommended), it gave me a chemical burn to my face, and I had to see my dermatologist and get an Rx cream to heal my skin up. :(
I know it works for a lot of people and that's great, but if you have sensative skin, be careful with it.
I have a lot of problems with my facial skin being dry, so Proactiv just dried me out even more. If your skin problems come from oily skin then it might work for you. Good Luck!
I used it two separate times, about two years apart. Both times it made my face even redder than usual and it didn't clear up my breakouts at all (sometimes they were even worse). I naturally have reddish undertones so I definitely didn't need a product that made my face even splochier. For the amount of money proactive costs it just wasn't worth it because it didn't work any better than my trusy neutrogena (I would even say it is worse than drugstore brands).
However, it did work for my sister who already had almost perfect skin to clear up a few breakouts here and there. Also, the mask works fantastic and I would buy that product alone anytime :)
In high school, I asked my dermatologist if I should try it, and he pretty much laughed at me...
but my BF's roommate uses it (guy) and he loves it!
hope it works for you Nachos!
Proactive worked wonders for me and FI, but we had to tailor it for our skin. We both only cleanse once a day, not the recomended twice, because it was to harsh for our skin to use twice a day. But, once a day is a miracle. Breakouts gone, skin tone even, and fresh looking.
Hope it works for you the way it worked for me!
I tried it way back in the day when I was in high school & I just remember it drying out my skin sooo badly. I haven't tried it again, but my current face wash is failing me also, so I've been getting tempted to try it out again since I hear so many good things about it.
I tried the Proactiv set in college and it only worked for the first month. After the first month my acne came back. I hope it works for you though!
I've never tried it but my cousin swears by it. When I saw her this past week, her skin looked totally different than the last time--much clearer but not dried out. She said it was all due to Proactiv.
It worked for me for a year or so and then it just stopped and I started breaking out all the time. Plus the whole time I was using it my cheeks were red and irritated from dryness. Also, it makes some people sun-sensitive so beware!
I've known a few people who have really loved it, but I'm terrified of it because of another friend who had an allergic reaction to one of the active ingredients. The second day she used it, her face flushed, burned and she ended up passing out (at work, as a Starbucks barista, while serving a customer) and having to go to the hospital.
I've never had much of an acne problem, so I've never used it personally, but do hope it works well for you!
I know so many people who have had bad experiences with Proactive: skin drying out intensely, it not working at all, it not working after a sort period of time, it causing rashes, etc.
I started using DDF sacylic acid on an area prone to breakouts at age 15 and haven't looked back since. their products work miracles. it dried up that initial rash/breakout, which i'd had continuously for at least two years, and the only time the rash came back is two years ago when i was on vacation and forgot my bottle of stuff at home. since 15 i've turned four people into DDF converts, including FI! it started with me applying my "magic sacylic acid formula" onto his face, where he is prone to getting blackheads, and when he realized that it literally cleared them up overnight, i got him hooked on their face wash. he'd trieed everything else in the book, including Proactive, since a young teen, and nothing had worked without frying out his skin, as this does. it has rave reviews on sephora, so you can see for yourself: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P1826&shouldPaginate=true&categoryId=3528
this is the 'miracle gel' i use on my problem spot: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P1812&shouldPaginate=true&categoryId=3528
for $32 it is so worth. i would highly recommend DDF to everyone with skin problems.
Thanks everyone! Wow, now I'm a little scared to try it, but I'm wondering if the problem most people had was with the benzoyl peroxide? I know a lot of people are sensitive to it but I've been using it for years so I'm thinking I might be ok. Maybe I'll start out using it once a day and see how that goes instead of the twice a day that they say to do. I normally only wash my face in the morning so I'm thinking twice a day might be too much for my skin.
It worked for me, but I've found that the Acne Free system (sold at Target, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, everywhere) works just as well at a fraction of the cost of Pro Active. It's the same three step process, but you can also just buy the Acne Free face wash, which is what I've started doing for winter, since my skin is dryer.
If you're worried about your face being dried out from harsh cleansers, just use a gentle formula in lieu of treated face wash. I have two acne prescriptions, so I cleanse with a gentle scrub in the morning and then a normal cleanser at night.
Also, if your problem is white heads, Mario Badescu Drying Lotion is awesome for them.
I had a wonderful experience with Proactiv. I've used it on and off for about six years now (I'm still in college), and every time I come back to it, my skin clears right up! I hope it works out well for you. :)
Also, Clean&Clear's Persegel (white tube) does wonders for spot treatment!
proactive saved my face... but bleached my towels. I'm so glad I started using it before the wedding, I haven't stopped because it works so well for me!
I am hooked on my Proactiv. I've been using it since ummm middle school? I tried to wean myself off of it last year to switch to NARS skincare, which had awful results! I was quickly back on the bandwagon with my Proactiv. And YES D'Orsay you are sooo right...my towels kind of were ruined at first. I highly recommend going out to the store and buying a stack of white washcloths. I use those to wipe my face dry after using the face wash so it doesn't ruin my towels!
@nachos: I don't think that I was having problems with the benzoyl peroxide. I am currently using the Neutrogena Advanced Solutions which has a high percentage of both salycilic acid and benzoyl peroxide and I'm not having as many problems. I think that part of the problem with Proactiv is the scrubby scratchy nature of the cleanser instead of a cream cleanser.
I used it a year ago, and it totally dried out my skin. So, I changed the amount I was using, and it worked great. I just couldn't justify paying that much for face wash. I use Neutrogena Oil Free Acne wash and swear by it. My face has been majorly breaking out, and it cleared it up in a week! And, it's way cheaper!
It made my skin super dry and irritated but i know people who swear by it including my man.
I do love the sulfur mask though.
Honestly I have had the best results with Acne Free ... sold at any drugstore .... for around $20 for the kit... it is not nearly as drying as Proactive on my skin and works well for me. They have 3 formulas one for Severe and normal i guess and sensitive skin
i am ON the proactiv bandwagon.
Seriously. If I don't use it for a few days I will start breaking out and literally over night my skin will get better when I use it. The sulfur mask is everything great that people talk about but it makes your skin smell funky.
I need to use it twice a day for the best results but the fiance only uses it once. I have super sensitive skin and have never had an issue with redness or anything. The best results for me happen when I am using it faithfully.
Good luck!
I know you posted this 2 weeks ago, but I had to put in my vote for ProActiv! I am 100% a ProActiv fan. I've never really had a problem with acne per se, but I have those little bumps under the skin sometimes, and I'm nearly glow-in-the-dark pale so at the slightest irritation, my skin gets red like crazy. And on top of that, my skin goes back and forth from dried out to oil slick depending on the day, but ProActiv totally took care of all of that. You do have to sort of tailor it to you though. Like some other posters on here, I only use it once a day too (I use a St. Ives cleanser in the morning), and definitely make sure to moisturize.
Clinique's Acne Care line is.....AWESOME. Well worth every penny. Proactiv worked for me for a bit, not long term. Good luck! Skin care can be such a nightmare...
benzoyl peroxide is very bad for your skin. it's very harsh and can cause uneven skin tones. I used it 5 years ago and it did nothing...Even Benzaclin (a gel that includes clindamycin, the antibacterial gel) didn't cut it!
What helped clear up my skin before the wedding was a combination of dead sea mud soap (You can get a bar for 7 dollars from amazon) salicylic acid face wash, dermalogica daily microfoliant, and a great oil-free moisturizer etc. Of course everyone's skin is different, but the key is antibacterial agents, acne-fighting agents (salicylic acid, sulfur...or benzoyl peroxide), hydration & moisture, and exfoliation. oh don't forget sunscreen
Don't overcleanse your skin and moisturize! When you don't, your skin thinks it's thirsty and produce more oil/sebum and more likely to get bacteria and voila! acne!
I was on Proactiv and using it religiously until about two months ago. I completely stopped taking it then a few weeks back started on it again and got a HUGE rash all over my face and neck. I think I had a reaction to one of the active ingredients. It cleared up in a day or two but was horrific while it lasted.
I won't use it again because of that. When my skin wasn't reacting to it it worked well. I would really only recommend it if you get really bad acne because it's pretty harsh.
I voted yes. For me, Proactiv has worked better than any other skin care product that I have tried. I was very skeptical about it at first, but it actually managed to keep my combination skin less oily and reduce breakouts withOUT completely drying out my skin (which a lot of products have done for me.) I've used it on and off for about 5 years, and everytime I go off it (to try something else to save $$), I end up shamelessly going back (and notice a difference in my skin within days.)
I suggest giving it a try, and if you aren't blown away with your first batch, cancel it. I found that I went through the bottles a lot slower than they predicted, so I would re-order about 1/2 as often as they suggested. Good luck!

Not sure how many of you read my blog post about my new skincare plan, but my facewash is totally failing me. So this morning, I bit the bullet and ordered the 3 piece kit of Proactive. I'm excited to get it in the mail and start using it - I figure at this point, I have nothing to lose!
Has anyone else used Proactive? Did it work well for you?
