Bees, this post is for nothing more than for me to share my excitement!
My FI and I put down a deposit on a piece of land over the weekend 🙂 It’s in a new estate going up in a suburb about 20 mins from where we are now, new area with lots of new developments (schools, shopping centres, etc) going in over the next 2 years.
The land titles in June/July next year so we have until then to figure out what style of house we want to build on it. And even though essentially nothing more will happen until then I’m so excited that things are starting to happen for us! We decided not to tell everyone (besides our parents, who we went to for financial advice before signing the contracts) since nothing will really happen for a while, but I needed to share with someone and who better than the Bee!
Anyone else recently purchase land, or build a house that has some advice? I feel the next 7 months will be full of looking at display homes and figuring out what we want out of our first home.

Congrats!!! That is amazing news. Growing up, my parents built 2 houses on lots. The first thing I can say from that experience, is find contractors that you can trust. We had so many issues with them.
Next, expect the unexpected. There will be a million and one things you never thought of that come up that require more money (and will extend your timeline). So be prepared for that. And be patient.
Lastly, take full advantage of the fact that you are building this house and can do whatever the hell you want (within reason). My mother has amazing taste and had very specific things she wanted to see and she was able to get it done beautifully. We had the loveliest custom touches on everything. My parents have since sold both homes to downsize and I miss those personal touches that would have always reminded me of my mom.

TheGridMonster: Thanks, I’m really looking forward to personalising this house to my hearts desire! I have over 6 months to figure out exactly what I want haha. We have the option of turning it into a house and land package and while that would be easier I am tempted to go our own way and get something super unique.
My parents have built a few houses too so their advice was also to expect the unexpected. The benefit of the house and land package is that it is a fixed cost and any extras that come up they cover the cost.
We have a lot of thinking/plannig to do!

We bought a half acre block of land a year ago. We are still waiting to borrow more money to build on it. Luckily my husband is an architect so he has designed it for us! I can’t wait to build it.
Will you be going through a volume housing company or getting a one off design from an architect?
oops sorry just read above you werent sure yet…
My sister went through the house and land package and they are very happy. It didn’t cost them much at all and they have a lovely house. There were quite a few hold ups though. Always expect it to take longer than they say to be finished!

JoLaura84: Sorry I just saw this post! Yes in Australia :)<br />As much as we would love something more unique we are now thinking that we will just get the hosue and land package for convenience. That way everything is included like fencing and whatever and the builders will do all the work to make sure the facade of the house matches up with the guidelines of the estate (they have restrictions to ensure that the houses DON’T all look the same haha). It also means that we have a set cost no matter what happends, like if the soil is too sandy we don’t pay extra for them to add clay before they lay the slab or whatever might happen.
Who did your sister build through if you don’t mind me asking?
