…and it’s THIS SATURDAY! I was convinced by a friend to sign up last minute, and now I’m very freaked out lol. I do run on a semi regular basis, but I’m a more casual runner I guess, and have rarely even timed myself. Obviously I’ve not trained at all for this race, and I’m not sure that I’ve ever actually run 5k without stopping.
1) will I be able to do this?!
2) any tips/tricks/advice? 🙂
3) what would be a “good” finishing time?

Woohoo! Fun! I love racing!
1) Yes! You might be sore later if you’ve never ran 3 miles straight, but you’ll be okay!
2) dress for the weather, make sure not too warmly. Pace yourself and don’t get too caught up with the other runners around you – its easy to start sprinting at the beginning due to the adrenaline of the race but you don’t want to burn out completely.
3) I think for a first race FINISHING is the best time! Don’t make crazy expecations for yourself and just set out to do your best and finish.

Oh, you’ll be fine! There’s tons of people that walk 5Ks, so as long as you’re running even some of the time, you’ll be all set!

Have fun! YES, you’ll be able to do this. If you have to walk a bit, that’s totally okay. There will be other people walking, but you may surprise yourself! It’s not like you’re trying to qualify or win the race. You’re job on Sat is just to finish it and then be proud of your accomplishment!

I just signed up for my 1st 5k this Saturday too! I decided to do a practice last night and did it in 28:51. Not bad considering I don’t consider myself much of a runner. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks everyone! Your words were so encouraging!! I’m excited and looking forward to the race. 🙂
@Mrs.SplatterPaint: Good luck on Saturday!! That was a great practice run!

Good luck!! I signed up for my first one (to run, not walk) at the end of May! My goal was to run the entire thing, as I have walked before. I was never a runner, but I have recently started training a bit (did couch to 5K) and am now working my way up to it!! I think finishing for me will just be the goal! I’m not very fast, but it doesn’t matter!! You’ll do great 🙂 🙂

I thought I would update to say that the race was this morning and it was SO MUCH FUN! I finished in a little less than 35 minutes, which is certainly not great but I don’t even care! I want to start training more seriously now and have found a half-marathon in November that I think I’ll sign up for, that should be plenty of time to train! Also hopefully it will be great motivation!
@Eireann: Good luck in May! 🙂 I did C25K as well about a year ago, that is a great program. I had never run before in my life before that so it was amazing for me to find out that I actually COULD run! I had to walk a couple of times today but am hoping that by my next 5k I can run the whole thing 😀
