Just went wedding dress shopping for the first time… is this normal?

I haven’t gone dress shopping yet, but that is definitely not normal. I’ve gone with friends and no one has ever denied informing them who the maker of the dress is. That sounds incredibly shady to me.

A lot of the salons I went to wouldn’t allow pictures (unless you ordered the dress), but all of them gave me the designer and style number on dresses I was really interested in.

So what you describe is a little out of the ordinary, at least in my area, but then again things can be vastly different from place to place.

freshflowers:  hmm, that’s not normal practice to not give you a designer name or style number around here, but it might be elsewhere. It IS normal to not be allowed photos unless you’ve purchased a dress though.

freshflowers:  I know a lot of boutiques don’t allow photos, but this is the 1st time I’ve heard of not giving out the designer or style number.  I mean, I get why they’re doing it and it’s their store and their rules, but how frustrating!

You could go in to try on that dress again and maybe you can sneak a peak at the designer label? That way you can at least visit that designer’s site and see which style number it is.

There are some salons that remove all of the tags, because they don’t want you to try on the dress and purchase it somewhere else.  Not allowing photos is normal at many of the bridal salons that I went to.

freshflowers:  I do not think that is normal and I would absolutely not be buying my gown from them just out of pure spite alone. If they won’t tell you the designer fuck them…it can’t be that hard to figure out what designer it was and then narrow it down to the exact style. That is crazy!!! If any bridal shop had done that to me I would have immediately gathered my things and told them they wouldn’t be getting any business from me or any of my friends or family…ever.

ETA…the no photos things is pretty normal I think.

I would go back and try it on again, and while I was in the dressing room, I’d snap a pic of the tags. They shouldn’t be in the flipping dressing room with you anyway.

Does the boutique have a website that says which designers they carry? If so, that could help narrow it down so you can find out what it is by browsing online.

Edit: or you could call them and ask what designers they carry, pretending to be somebody who hasn’t already been there. I can’t imagine they won’t tell you!

I’m not in the US, but it seems like a very odd practice to me!

I suggest checking their website to see what designers they carry and search from there. If you can narrow down a few designers and describe the dress on here, someone is likely to be able to help you identify it – that’s if it’s a designer dress, maybe they are trying to hide a parallel import…

Otherwise I would call them or go in and say that you’re in love witht he dress and want to buy it and need to know the cost so you can bring cash in… if you describe it, hopefuly they will give you the price and model number.

It may even be worth naming the store on here… to see if other brides have ha or heard of a similar experience. Maybe google their reviews too?

I went to DB and they let me take tons of pics then she wrote down the numbers of the ones I liked then I asked her if I could have the list and she told me no they were putting it in their system…which means I can’t discuss costs with my mother now….

The place I bought my dress at did the same thing. Basically it’s so that you don’t try to find it on the Internet for cheaper.
