Things are obviously different here in the US, but I’m not sure why it would matter what surname one has when getting married.

@berlyn:  I’d imagine that you can. I don’t see why he wouldn’t be able to get married just because his surname is that of his mother rather than his father. This sounds like something that happens in your area though and not here in Canada. Here it doesn’t matter whose surname you have when you do all of the applications and legal bits.

@berlyn:  well the name on the birth certificate is his name. I’d be using that one.

Whatever his legal name is, that’s the one you’d use. His surname not being his father’s shouldn’t be a problem.

@berlyn:  I don’t know why it would matter what surname one has when getting married. Whatever name was his at birth is his name, unless there is a law in your country that requires otherwise.
