Visiting FI in 4 days seeing 4 venues and 2 florists and whatnot..and will give them all the details i wnat so when we can set a date all FI has to do is go pay deposits and sign contracts..We will have a whole bunch of back-ups plans but hoping since its jan it shouldnt be as crazy..
Ive got my dress, DDs flowergirl dress, and a few litle things not a ton..
Where are you from..your fiance
all the best
I live in Tscaloosa, Alabama. My fiance is from Nigeria but lives in South Africa. To complicate things even more he may be moving to South Korea soon. There he will teach englich for 5-6 months.
Hopefully, I'll get to go look at venues before the summer is over. We plan on getting married in Jacksonville, FL since its not far from my family and it has an international airport to make it easy for people coming from overseas.
All the best to you, too!!
I'm just in the very early stages (we're just putting the petition together now), but eeesh! I'm overwhelmed. He's in California. I'm in Ontario (Canada). He has no family. I have a huge family, all in Ontario. This is a 2nd marriage for both of us. I'd be fine with just a JOP/courthouse wedding and then coming back to Ontario later for a party, but he is really set on having a church wedding with all my family there.
I just can't begin to fathom how to pull this off, without knowing what date we might be looking at until almost the last minute.
We've even talked about getting married in Buffalo (just across the US border for my family), but I'm not loving that idea. Do I enter the US and fly to CA, then we both fly up to Buffalo and meet my family for a wedding in a city none of us know? The airfare alone would be a big expense, on top of the wedding and K-1/AOS expenses.
Any thoughts or suggestions of how others have made this whole "wedding without a date" thing happen would be so very appreciated!
@mnbzmama: A lot of people go to the courthouse and have a larger wedding later. I'm scared that if we did that we'd never get around to having the larger wedding. So, I'm happily making things even though I don't have a date. Plus, Nigerians (my fiance's nationality) LOVE to party!!!
I'm processing a K-1 right now too! I'm Canadian, joining my FI in the USA. He's also deploying so we're trying to plan a wedding around immigration and the military!
We're 3 months in (as of today) and just sent back an RFE, the lawyer expects an NOA2 soon!
We are doing as much DIY as possible. Got NOA2 about a month ago, the embassy is being slow. We figure that once we know the interview date we can book the venue, because the visa takes 8-10 days after interview. I am sure the gamble on the deposit will pay off, if we are rejected we will just have to deal with it! haha
so that will maybe give us two months. it shouldnt be too bad.I made a brooch bouquet and am going to buy decorations on ebay, with fake flowers and lots of led lights.
May I add that we got our NOA2 6 weeks ahead of schedule if that gives anyone hope!
good luck everyone!
My husband and I went through this last year (and part of 2009). Because of the unknowns, we talked things over with both of our families and decided to get married by civil ceremony to fulfill the immigration requirements and then set our wedding date for later in the year. Our 3 month period landed right in the high travel time and my husbands family has 7 people in it, so we wanted to wait until a time that would be financially do-able for them.
Personally we didn't want to start setting anything definitively until we had the passport with the visa stamp in it in hand. When we had our couples interview here in the USA after our civil ceremony, the immigration guy told us that they have no set timeline to get things done in. I had a few people that I know that started the process sooner then us, had their wedding fully planned out (vendors paid etc), and then didn't get the passport with visa stamp until about 4 months after us (6 months or so after their planned wedding)! FYI they'd had their interview and for whatever reason they were chosen at that time for further scrutiny for no apparent reason and that caused the hangup that took 6 months. Other people have had it work in their favor... there's just really no knowing what's going to happen.
@beebee89: omg thats so reassuring/exciting. We sent out application in in May..I just got home last night...and each trip is harder and harder to leave i just want it now...lol
So glad to see others on here who understand the visa process. I have to keep telling people that my wedding date isn't up to me, it's up to the government but they don't get it. Unless you actually go through the visa process you have no ideas what you have to go through.
@CaramelT: Its really annoying having to explain to everyone!and people going "I couldnt be bothered with that"... like, if you found the love of your life you would do it too, no matter what.
If anyone is interested I found visajourney website quite helpful especially when trying to work out timelines and stuff
@beebee89:I hightly recommend VisaJourney, also. I visit it everyday to get tips and see if anything that comes up might be relevant to me and my fiance.

Anyone out there like me? I'm going to be a DIY bride but of course the K-1 visa (just mailed off petition yesterday) process makes it very hard to set a date. I've decided to go ahead and start making things now. That way when the time comes to set a date a lot of things will be ready. I'm also doing the legwork of pricing and info for venues. Anyone else doing this?
