We actually probably will be playing a couple of movies as we'll have a TV available in the room the kids will be located in.
I absolutely love these activity books for kids.. and they can be given instead of favours. You could always make something similar if you don't want to buy them...

Oh and they also do one's specifically for young bridesmaids and pageboys if you have any..

I think crafts are the best way to keep kids entertained. I'm planning on buying a bunch of non-messy craft supplies (adhesive foam cut-outs, pom-poms, yarn, beads, paper scraps, glue sticks, jewels, felt, tissue paper, but NO glitter) and let them have at it.
A couple other ideas I'm considering: Leaf rubbings, since I'm getting married in October. Putting a big pile of leaves on the table with paper and crayons. I'm also going to frame a couple examples so they know how to do it/what they will end up looking like.
Gumdrop houses. Big bowls of gumdrops or other chewy candy (starbursts, marshmallows) with a bunch of colorful toothlpicks. I've done this before, and it's amazing what kids come up with!
Another idea is personalized puzzles. You can buy little puzzles that are plain white on one side. Kids can color on them, write a message, or whatever.
I saw an idea on one forum where the bride took engagement pictures and made them into cartoon outlines for the kids to color in. I loved that idea! :)
My biggest tool in the kid issue is having teen helpers! We will have A LOT of kids there under the age of 10 so I told my daughter, who will be 14 at the time, that she can invite 2 friends to the wedding as long as they are helpers for the first half of the wedding. Once dinner is over they are free to party! There are also 2 other girls coming to the wedding that are the same age and I will seat them over there too. :) My thing is that kids will take 5 minutes alone to do a craft but if they are being led by someone else than it can take a good half hour. haha.
well, I think its the parents' repsonsibility to keep them entertained, if they wanted to bring them its up to them; I had about 9 kids at my wedding, as soon as the music started they were all dancing; it was fun; I didnt go out of my way to plan any kiddie activities, it's not a kiddie party. I had too much to think of, I knew they would have fun and they did, it was cute watching them
@NolloUK: Those are awesome! We're making some coloring pages for the kids, has mazes and things from the wedding.
@babylou: We're actually having a candy bar at our wedding, so hopefully (with their parents) they'll get some candy and can use some of it for the crafts. I love crafts
Thanks for the ideas so far!
I was at a wedding years ago (I was like 17) with a kids table and I ended up hanging out there and having way more fun than just sitting and listening to people talk. They had butcher paper for the tablecloth for the kids to draw all over, then random candies and things in the centerpieces like wands, tops to spin, smarties jewlrey, think things you get at party city that entertain. Loved it. I would do it if I had a single kid in my life, but I don't =(.
I LOVE the butcher paper idea for a tablecloth!! I may have to steal that! We are getting married in the fall and have bought (on clearance at places like Oriental Trading) tons of coloring pages, crafts, stick on pumpkin decorations, etc. We plan on purchasing a bunch of mini pumpkins for them to decorate =) We will also have a photo booth and I'm sure that will keep everyone entertained!
@NolloUK: brilliant thanks thats just what i have been looking for i have 8 aged 6 months to 10 in a wedding of just 50 so its quite a percentage of our guests. i wanted to give them something appropriate even if the smaller ones just scribble its their book they can do as they like
ps all my children will be sitting with their parents and thats one table with mum and 4 kids 10 8 7 and 6 months !!!! as dad is BM so will be on top table with us and close their friend wants to sit with them too. her son will be 10 months, so thats 2 adults and 5 kids!!! on a table for 8 lol!
i AM NOT going to sit one of my single friends on that table just to make numbers its not fair.
you know what i am just NOT going to worry about it . children will be children but on our day they are their PARENTS responsibility not mine.
i will provide favour bags with colouring and sticker books etc after that i am going to enjoy my day :0)
lolly

So what idea's do you have to keep kids at the reception busy and not doing all kinds of craziness?
Although my wedding is going to be fun (games and such) I'm still thinking of many things to keep kids entertained since their attention spans are non-existence. I'm planning to make a few kid friendly tables that they can draw on (tablecloth they can make actually write/color on), coloring pages for them, and some toys.
Any other ideas?
