Well it's a big thing to a lot of my friends, but I have a horse, so that's why. :)
@mallorynjmf - it's so much fun! Do you ride? I spent my entire childhood begging for a horse - no luck, although I did get lessons for about five years. When I turned 17 I said screw it to my mom and found a way to ride again - a year later I adopted my mare! Best decision!
I'm from Kentucky!! I love everything Derby. I just took my mom to the airport yesterday. She'll be there. I went last year and loved every minute of it.
We got married last year on Derby Day! We were in PA, but my dad is a racehorse trainer and a lot of our friends are 'horse people'. We projected the derby onto the wall during cocktail hour. Fancy hats were optional, and lots of ladies wore them! :) It's a really special thing for us. Everytime our anniversary falls on Derby Day (every few years), we're going to put a big bet on the longshot. (Mine That Bird won last year, on our wedding day, at 50-1). :)
We have had Derby parties here before. I think the race is on TV but it's mostly an excuse to wear hats and cute dresses.
For some reason, my sister and mom have a real soft spot for the Derby. They always get really excited about it. We usually watch it but not with a whole party and such. Although, I have always wanted to try a mint julep and wear a fantastic hat...maybe I'll get invited to a Derby party someday.
The Kentucky Derby is the most famous of all the derbys! Even over here in the UK it's a big deal. Horses are a big things over here though ;) It's a great big deal to get dressed up to go to Ascot.
Oh definitely! We don't usually go to a party but last year or the year before that we got dressed up (complete with the big hat for me) and went out to a (Mexican lol) restaurant to watch it. It was a lot of fun. I'm not sure what I'll do this year since J will be out of town. I may just watch it at the house.
Yea Louisville! Getting ready to enjoy Derby festivities and awesome weather today!
We actually got to go to the Barnstable Brown party last year - which was really cool. I've worked different events around it almost every year (one year I worked on a party bus - it was great). So if you're local it's also a good time to make some money.
@mallorynjmf - You should definitely make it a point to go to Oaks sometime - you have to get the chance to wear a ridiculously large hat! Oh and the year the Girls Next Door were here I got to see them at the Playboy party (I love them) - Bridget is going to be at Hotel on Saturday this year.
@camrie I bet the Barnstable Brown party was awesome!!, Every year I say next year I will go to the Oaks!! But havent made it yet!! So maybe next year! lol I have to work all weekend!!
Oh..I never realized how big the derby is outside of KY let alone the country!! UMMM where have I been?? LOL
I'm totally excited for the Derby... but then again, I'm a horseracing nut. I go to Saratoga a couple times each track season. And I went to Churchill Downs once when I was eight or so!
Yup. I'm a total dork. My shower is the day of the Belmont (the third of the triple crown races) - and I let it be known that it could not conflict. so the shower's 1 to 3pm... well before the race at 6 or so. hehee.
I can’t wait for the derby tomorrow! I’m not huge into horse racing, but my mom’s side of the family is from KY and my dad’s dad and grandpa owned race horses for a number of years, so we’ve always watched it.
We’re going to a Derby party tomorrow, though, sadly apparently no one is going to wear big hats (???!!!) :( we will be drinking plenty of juleps though!!!
My money’s on Super Saver! (And probably, Ice Box).
I thin the Derby is a pretty universally known event - not quite SUPERBOWL material, but I'd be surprised if someone said they'd never heard of it. I grew up in Pittsburgh, and bars and clubs would host Derby Day parties and themed events. I now live in NYC, and there are lines around the block for the OTBs ALL AFTERNOON (though having Belmont a train ride away probably keeps ppl interested). I've been to Belmost (both for the Belmont Stakes and just regular races) and gone to KD parties, but never made it to Derby Day. I've been to a few other races in other cities (huge fan of Foxfield with my UVA friends!!) but then I also had a horse growing up=)
I've heard of the Derby, but never attended. Like some above - I'd love to own my own horse! What fun!
I hope you all enjoy your own parties no matter where you are tomorrow for the Kentucky derby!!
@gabrielleelise1981 - Nicely done! You got the cold exacta! I'm impressed! :) I'm glad he won - Calvin Borel is a hoot.

OKay... So I know that the derby is a local thing around here, (Louisville) But I just thought I would ask if any one has ever been, or heard of it etc. I have grown up here so its like a holiday. BUT I havent ever actually been to Churchill Downs on derby!!We have celebrities in town, and different events that go on during the weeks before the derby. At the track ladies wear like a big derby hat with a pretty dress, drink Mint Julips and bet on horses!
And just incase you have NO IDEA what it is... Its horseracing at Churchill Downs!
Oh here is picture from like a few years ago of Hugh Hefner and the girls next door on derby!
